Did they learn from their bitter lost at the Presidential polls? Did the voter apathy teach them any lessons to restructure their approach in meeting the expectation of the electorates? Have they put their egos behind them for another chance? Did Halifa and Darboe answer their own questions of why they were rejected so badly? Do they really know what it means to have significant presents in the house of representatives? These are questions Gambians expect the opposition to have answered before the next phrase of elections.
These questions are fundamental and are simple logic. Gambians ask these questions because they expect these leaders to put everything aside and return to meaningful political tactics. It is not about who has what popularity. It is about understanding what it simply means to have significant number of opposition candidates in the house to influence legislation and put true checks and balances on the government.
It is about having level headed candidates who understands the impact of government borrowing policy on the nation's economy decades ahead. It is about preventing the government from changing the constitution to favor it's own selfish agenda. It is about preventing the government from passing dragorian bills like the media bill that limits our freedom of expression. It is also about holding the government accountable and making sure that National audits are conducted as stipulated in the constitution.
These are some of the reasons the opposition has to contest the national assembly elections. They have an obligation not only to contest the elections but also to do it tactically so they can maximise that number of seats to dominate the house. These is what we expect from them.
The unfortunate prediction I have is that instead of looking at the National interest, many in the opposition camps are looking for Vengeance to proof that they can prevent the likes of Halifa from winning their seats again. Others have so much bitterness in their hearts they cannot see anything positive in the opposition forming tactical alliances to nominate candidates in their individual strong holds. It once again comes back to blindness, ignorance and political imaturity.
Any gambian with common sense would want to see smart people who understand the role of members in the house. People like Hamat Bah with all the political blunders he made is much more effective in the house. These are the kind of people that may not make any significants at the Presidential level but need to be present at the house to expose the government from its corruption. The more of those people we have the more impact they can make on holding the government more accountable. Do they once again realize what is at stake? I hope so...
