Democracy isn’t always pretty; But it has proven to work!!!
By Gainako (GON)Posted November 15th, 2006

Democracy can sometimes be ugly; the wealthy can take advantage of the system to rise up to power.
Leaders can abuse the system and impose their extreme agendas on the rest of the populace. Citizens’
private lives can be invaded with no end in sight. The majority can impose its will on the minority, and
electorates can sometimes have voter apathy.

Despite all these bad taste that comes with a democratic system of government, it has once again proven to be THE BEST
way to change a government that has failed to be accountable to the demands of its electorates.

The recent concluded midterm elections in the U.S has proven beyond any reasonable doubt that the ballot system is the
most effective and peaceful way of changing a government. The voters spoke their minds loud and clear through the secret
ballot box without uttering a single word or mobilizing a mass protest against what they have viewed as a hijacked mandate
that they clearly gave to the Republican Party to represent the interest of the country.

The voters who overwhelmingly voted for the wealthiest and arguably the most aggressive party in the U.S has quietly but
discreetly taken away the power without a single incident within 24 hours. The amazing thing is that all this voting was done
without or with minimal disruption to the daily lives of the electorates. It demonstrates the power of the ballot box and the
superiority of one man one vote system as oppose to Coups, Mass Uprising and destruction of life and property.

Another interesting phenomenon about the democratic system is the fact that almost all the candidates that contested the
elections for both the U.S senate and House of Representatives are millionaires. These people could arguably live a
comfortable live outside of politics. They could travel to the moon over night and live a life far from being servants of the
people. However, the reality is that they are seen toiling and kneeling before the voters day in and day out appealing to the
electorates for their votes. Some spend millions of dollars from their own money just to be elected to office.

Now the question for the reader is; in what system of government do you find the wealthiest working so hard to get the
attention of the poor and the middle class? Certainly, not in a communism system; not in a totalitarian system of government,
and obviously not in a one party system where the ruling class are treated as Lords, kings and masters.

A true democratic system of government means power recites in the hands of the people. They have the audacity to vote
for a government that represents their interest and boot them out when they work against the wishes of the electorates
without fear of reprisal or intimidation.

The lesson for the whole world especially Africans and their leaders is crystal clear. There is a better system of changing our
governments without resorting to violence, killings, and destruction of our countries that belongs to us. Our leaders must
open their eyes and understand that if it works for them, it can work for us. The road to the ballot box can be ugly, but it
has worked and will continue to work for any society in pursuing democracy

A few quotes to remember:

“Give us the ballot, and we will transform the salient misdeeds of bloodthirsty mobs into the calculated good deeds of
orderly citizens”. Dr. King

“A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its
people”. J. F Kennedy

“Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future”. John F. Kennedy
