BUNJA DARBOE AND CO, CAPTAIN WASSA CAMARA TESTIFIES By Fabakary B. Ceesay
Testifying before the court martial at Yundum Barracks on Thursday 9th November 2006, Captain Wassa Camara told the court that he has served The Gambia National Army for almost (15) fifteen years and he was currently stationed at Yundum Barracks. He said he was at the Yundum barracks on 21st March trying to reinforce his men when he received a call from Corporal Tambadou, a Military Police. He said Tambedou told him that the present CDS Colonel Lang Tombong Tamba found them at a check point and informed them that the then CDS, Colonel Ndure Cham is allegedly involved in a coup plot and that Colonel Cham should be arrested if he is seen anywhere.
He noted that he then acted on the instructions as a marshal of the military Police. He said such information is very sensitive, whether they are true or not. He said he then reinforced his men at a checkpoint and later came back to the barracks. He said at the gate of the barracks, he met a vehicle that flashed its light on his car. He said he heard a soldier calling him. He said Captain Camara come out of the car and said, “You are under arrest.” He said the soldiers were about ten to fifteen. He added that as he came out of the car, one Private Sarjo, cocked his gun and aimed at his head, but a Sergeant ordered them not to shoot at him. He said the Private then said to the Sergeant, “Remember the instructions we were given, he either move fast or we shoot him.” He pointed out that the soldier was aiming at his heard. He asserted that Sergeant Augustine Mendy who was the leader of the arresting team told him to join their vehicle. He said that he was taken to one infantry battalion, where he was told by (2nd) second Lieutenant Badjie that he was under arrest. He said he was disarmed by Badjie. He added that Badjie asked him to surrender his pistol, but before he could say a word, he had a nasty slap from his back and so they started beating and slapping him up to about ten (10) minutes. He said he was later ordered to join a vehicle and he heard Badjie telling Trawally to move on. He aid he arrived at Mile Two Prison at around midnight.
