The New Gambian (Government paper)reporter sumed things us thus:
"This was the most sensational and pathetic momemnt in all the ceremonies, when we, at last, come to realise that the shackles were not only about our wrists and ankles, but have by God's grace been broken and shattered, and we now are as God intended us to be in the contnenet in which he had placed us"
Tears staretd rolling down cheeks as the National anthem was sung and church bells rang.
Then a Malian delegate turned to his neighbor and said" Now the real problem begins". He was right. That problem still persists unfortunately.
