If you see the average road conditions in Gambia you must admit that Gambian drivers are excellent. Taxi drivers have their Paris-Dakar rallye every day.

On the other hand many of them seem to come straight from hell... I never saw such an irresponsible behaviour. Even the drivers in Turkey, which are known as a very rude bunch, appear like angels against these (sometimes far too young) drivers.

i not surprised. 90% of them are senegalese and the think is our traffic rules are completely opposite. In senegal they use the French system and these drivers come with this experience.

for example around the Round-About, we give way, they just head straight in , thinking they're right! Fools

Njucks, I think you should try driving between Westfield and Tabokoto between 4 and 7pm and then you will know they are Gambians. There is simply no respect for trafic regulations.

i always avoid that road because of the permanent traffic jam. i simply just dont understand what is going on with that road construction but it is not unsual to see a van driver heading directing into you on your lane!

but the coastal road is the most dangerous.for some it an attempt to push the mileage speeding at more than +100km/hr.

people have no respect.almost every week there was an accident at the Traffic light at shell. at night after 12, say when there is no traffic at Shell and the Red light is on , they dont even care to stop.ofcourse that would be a waste of time perhaps.

i noticed that there is another traffic light at West field, which is a good thing but i hope they dont knock it over for being on their way

You can easily spend ½ to 1 hour between Westfield and Tabokoto during rush hour.
Kayjatta, I once saw a police officer gave up trafic control and let the chaos continue.

Njucks,
I suggest you blaim the Police authorities who issue drivers licences to people who do not know the traffic rules and regulations. The avrage driver in the Gambia cannot read a sign board. How would you expect them to know the signs? Most of the drivers are Gambians , living in the country side , comming to Banjul and get drivers licinces without going throw a test of somekind. The second reason is that Taxi and buss owners do not care the life of the passengers they pick up. Never must you blaim the Senegalise who know traffic rules much better that Gambian drivers. in fact Gambians cannot drive in Senegakl because the Gambians have no proper driving schools. They do not learn the traffic rules and regulations in the proper manar. The Gambian drivers bribe to get drivers licences. This we can clearly see when guys who live with us here in Europe and cannot drive at all, but in the Gambia they are the best drivers. This is not correct. The driving schools in the Gambia together with the police should set up proper guidelines for all drivers. This is what we lack. The adminctration has been the same since the British left. The car and buss owners are only intrested in the money they can get but not the lives of the passingers. Njucks, I suggest that Senegalise drivers drive better than you if you can. The problem is not at the turn tables. The problem is the respect for traffic rules and regulations and sign boards. If you cannot read a sign board how can you drivw correctly.
My mother commented omn this when she was here to visit. She said"there are more cars here than at home, how come the accidents are very few?" Every car on the lane respect eachother. This is what we lack in the Gambia and not Senegalise drivers. Moreover the police should not allow people to drive when they cannot find their own way. Here in Sweden it can cont you up to 500 Euro to obtain a drivers licence. May be it is more cheaper in other countries. But the respect for the traffic regulations lacks a lot in the Gambia.
It is our own Gambian fellowmen and women who buys junck cars from europe for shipment to Gambia. This is hurrible. Cars that are put off the road in Germany can be seen on the roads in the Gambia. This shows people do not care about oneanother's lives. I think njucks you have to blame the Gambians. Senegal is far more advanced than Gambia when you come to these issues.

Oh ja, Njucks, das sieht nach einer echten Sonderanfertigung, einer Spezialproduktion aus; wahrscheinlich 'Made in Gambia'. Ein Stern alleine reichte wohl nicht...

Momodou, nice photos! Only some weeks ago I passed this road... I feel homesick...
