it has been recently brought to my attention about Euculyptus plantations damaging the crop production up country in Bangsang. Apparently these trees can grow up to 6 metres in radius and are drinking up all the underground water. Thus depriving neighbouring farms from growing crops such as cassava. They have extensive roots systems, which make them a penicious and very difficult tree to eradicate from the environment. Eculyptus wood is extremely hard to cut, if they are burnt they regenerate, they also seem to be chemical resistant. The specious of Euculyptus is neither suitable for essential oils and very little else. It seems that the Euculyptus plantation was ill thought out scientific experiment for the Sahel, and is damaging secure livelihoods in the area.
