WOMEN PROTEST OVER WATER SHORTAGE
By Yaya Dampha

Water is becoming a gem in the communities of Latrikunda Sabiji and Wellingara. These communities have been faced with acute water shortage for many days. On Tuesday 3rd October over one hundred women from Latrikunda and Wellingara took to the streets to vent their anger over the acute water shortage that hit their community. The women walked along the Serre- Kunda/Tabokoto High way chanting the slogan: “We have no water.” Upon arrival at the NAWEC outlet at Latrikunda, the women found a cleaner scrubbing the floor. One of the demonstrators who rushed into the office and found the cleaner scrubbing the floor shouted: “NAWEC has access to water and that is why their cleaner is scrubbing the floor.” An official of NAWEC advised the women to go to their main office and lodge their complaints there. The women proceeded to the NAWEC Office at Serrekunda where they were told that the engine that pumps the water has a problem and that engineers are trying to address the issue.

At the NAWEC office in Serre Kunda they complained that they had not got access to water for many days and the wells on which they relied dried up. They said they spent the previous night in the street hoping to get some water from the stand pipes, but their hopes varnished in thin air. The women said if the situation is not addressed, they would march to the State House.

Dear water,

Please come down on those in need of you. You are a drink (food) and a mercy to all humanity. What will they do without you? It is not a fault of their own that they are trapped in a system that cannot provide them with something basic like water.

Sincerely Yours,
Dalton.

A clean water supply is a basic human right. It should be the FIRST priority of any government. How can you put roads or education even before that? The suffering of people without a water supply they can trust to drink from is awful. Many childrens lives would be saved if the government dealt with this.
When you travel round the Gambia you see many villages with water pumps. ALot of these were provided by Action aid NOT the government. Surely it should not be beyond the government to sort this problem out once and for all. Of course there needs to be the political will.

It is good to see Gambian women being proactive and a lasting solution to Gambia's water supply must be found because the situation is intolerable. Especially as the majority writing into the forum take for garnted that when we turn on any tap anywhere at anytime in the county's we reside it that water will come out of it. We emphasize and feel the frustrations when we go to Gambia and can't get water but we don't have to live with the situation day in and day out. Yes Sister's by all means work to statehouse if that's the only way to bring the matter to successful conclusion.

Come on Yaya bring in some experts from foreign to teach NAWEC the skills they are lacking to supply the people with the water they need. Come on if they can turn desert into an all around oasis in North Africa. Whay can't Gambia's get water 24/7? NAWEC needs to train up its staff they need know- how and not a- know- it- all and don't- know- nothing attitude!

Peace

I have heard that the water table in some villages is being affected by various things to do with tourist developments. Obviously at the coast there is the golf course, then hotels with gardens. But in or near villages when people build to western standards with showers and flushing toilets this has a BIG impact on the water table for the village.
Sustainable tourism is very important and buildings should be ecologically sound so they have the least impact possible on local people.

Good to see you. You speak in parables. Do you mean to say that if you cannot take the heat you should get out of the kitchen? In other words are you saying that if they cannot serve the interest of the people, then they should not seek positions of leadership?

There you go Jayang always full of ideas. Good to se you back.

I recall the Brikama episode well-the famous slogan "Giwoh, giwoh. Moo kana giwoh sang" in mandinka meaning "Water, water. Let no one buy water."

Such a unity will be hard to achieve, be that the tyrannical administration succeeded in creating fear among Gambians.

I wish Gambians in the diaspora can extend their generosity by helping to dig traditional wells.

Let there be water in abundance at once!
