Gainako's editorial of October 5th is calling on Gambians, and the international community to rise up from their slumber state, and demand for the unconditional release of Hon. Kamaso, a former Gambian MP, arrested for subscribing to an online newspaper.

Please read!!

Dalton, In the past, the Gambia Journal has a site to sign a petition for those who were detained, like the lawyer, Mrs. Jack. Perhaps it would be possible to make a website petition for Hon. Kamaso for her release as a prisoner of conscience. From what I understand its been other a month or so since her detention and some rumour that she may not have lived because of the poor conditions in prison.

Newfy,

That's honestly our take on those at home and abroad. When OJ, Halifa, and Hamat were arrested, many did their effots. This one should follow similar footsteps. Gainako was going to prepare one, but some family members said that will jeopardise some engagements that they are doing to safe her life. Also, we approached some of her family members who are advised not to talk to the press. I understand.

I personally appeal to the president to show mercy as he said he is empowering women to release the former parliamentarian from detention as rumours had it earlier that Hon. Duta Kamaso may have died in detention.
This is a woman I know so well and came to respect. Her chrisma and love for her country is beyond dispute.I had worked with her and we used to call her Auntie Duta This woman, when I worked with her, was a combination of both male and female strength put together.I was really disturbed when it was alledged that she died in detention.Auntie Duta is both a mother ,father grandmother and grandfather for many people who are under her care now feeding directly from her purse.Mother of a lone daughter and about four to five sons (youngest in the US)Auntie Duta works very hard(you should meet her on the farm) to care for poor families who are not even her own.I was not surprised when she won her first parliamentary seat for Wuli.I want Gambians to know that Hon. Kamaso was a very strong woman, a single mother for more than a decade or two who had been a inspirsation for thousands of Gambian women..She single handedly brough up all he kids and educated them. She is a woman to emulate as she stood for the strength of women.
I urge Dr.Jammeh to release her with delay to return to her family and relatives in the name of peace and reconcliation.
Peace

Elder,

thank you. When i re-read our editorial with Baldeh's piece, i just couldn't control the flow of tears from my eyes. For a moment, i was stocked in something i cannot explain myself. Could be the rahmadhan fever, like my wife teased me-you know the Jallows cannot handle hunger and thirst. (laugh!)

But she is a woman of our time. By Allah and His holy month, let there be peace for her and all at once. ameen!!

Of course the president should show some mercy to hon. kamaso. she really does not derserve the kind of treatment she is having for a crime of standing for her people. the president should in the name of this holy month of ramadan let her free for her family, relatives and friends who have been enjoying her care, love and affection to continue having that. I don,t know hon. kamaso that much, but i met her one time in US and the little time i spent with her proved to me that she is what i will call "a real mother". May Allah relief her from all the hardship she is going through.

Great idea. That course of action has proved to be the best way forward in many other instances across the globe - in Sierra Leone we had to contend with the authorities about one Paul Kamara who Judge Rashid had sent to long term imprisonment for calling His Excellency Dr Alhaji Tejan Kabbah who has never set foot in prison, "a true convict".

You know how seriously the Mandinka man takes his honour. It is not violated with impunity that easily. Consequences are usually dire. So Paul eventually got solitary confinement in the late Foday Sankoh’s cell. Taught him a lesson: not to disrespect an incumbent honourable president.

We expected some Ramadan mercy for him. Eventually mercy arrived and Paul is less foolhardy and now behaving himself with greater circumspection.

For some presidents, even better than presidential immortality would be freedom and everlasting immunity from prosecution for crimes against individuals and Crimes against Humanity.

Fortunately, as far as my eyes can see, president Alhaji Yahya Jammeh, does not belong to the aforementioned category and is a man of the people. His heart is accessible to even greater compassion , especially during Ramadan, and should we adopt Newfy’s suggestion, then it is a question of a very reasonably worded letter on behalf of our missing sister. I for one would certainly append my signature to such a letter.

In such cases,it falls within the constitutional powers of the president’s prerogative to exercise Clemency/Mercy, Presidential Pardon or leniency on behalf of any of his citizens does it not?

Since no one, not even Jack Straw is above the law (according to Linton Kwesi Johnson) should we not expect a thorough-going investigation and preferably an independent commission of enquiry as to the bizarre or not so bizarre circumstances that should account for Madam/Mama Duta Kumaso's translation from life to something that seems to meet the level eye as more sinister and insidious than a summons from the angel of death?

Now that she is rleased, praise be to Allah a million times. I wish her well, and a faster recovery from all that hateful stress.
