DARBOE REJECTS ELECTION RESULTS
Ousainou Darboe, the leader of the UDP, has rejected the result of the presidential election.
In an interview with the Focus on Africa on Sunday, Mr. Darboe said that one of the APRC National Assembly members had signed a document on behalf of a returning officer in one of the constituencies up country. Mr. Darboe said, "The military presence was very prominent. Some of them were well armed. All these were intimidating factors. We do not really think that the IEC was really in charge of the process." As to what his next move will be, Mr Darboe said the Executive Committee of his party will meet and take a decision on the issue, pointing out that the decision could be legal or political. The journalist further put it to Mr Darboe that the opposition was fragmented and that is why he did not make an impact on the election. He remarked, "That would have been a valid statement if the NADD had also polled a considerable number of votes, but that is not the case. I have always maintained that a united front is meaningless without a level playing field. However united we would have been, the results would have been the same thing."
The journalist further told Mr Darboe that he had contested three times and lost three times and each time he complained of flaws. He asked him (Darboe) whether people would take him seriously. Mr Darboe retorted: "Those people who the situation in The Gambia will take me seriously, but those who do not the situation in The Gambia will not take me seriously. Those who support the APRC will also not take me seriously. The 1996 election was not condemned by me alone. It was condemned by the whole international community. It was wrong to say that I am merely complaining. In 2001 I didn't complain. In fact, I congratulated the President, although subsequently I discovered that there were some flaws. This year I am complaining because I have reasons to complain."

All those flaws were envisaged and concerns the opposition to tackle them. During elections they happened and all oppositions shared the same views together again. However valid these petitions are it would have help them if there was unity of purpose at the early stages of preparations for the elections.
Don't think these petitions from Darboe for UDP/NRP Alliance and Sallah for NADD would help anyway as they have both lost their opportunities. They also overcited it to opt for last minute boycot of the elections and put it in shambles! Strategically they could bank on that chaotic state to deal with the electoral process. |

yes, that's right. But my man-Darboe have to get to the statehouse, remember grandpa Kemo Dobo (RIP) said "among my family will be learned men, and people of leadership."-not referencing the exact qoute. Darboe ascertain that he is one of the "leadership." Professor Darboe & Sidat jobe (both doctorate) are the learned men.

Dalton, You seem to belive in things that do not exist. If the Gambians do not vote for Darboe how can he become a president. Sidat Diop is a defferent person from Darboe. Sidat is not as power hungry. I know both of them very well. I and Jinka Darbo were good friends before he died. Even the boys at Banja Kunda in Bansang knows me. Darboe is not honest to himself. He should have listened to the international observers. If you don't trust them (the observers) who shall you trust. Does darboe belive in himself or Gambians in the diaspora? The later cannot vote him in , it is only those who are there and register. This time he did not boy cut the elections, but come up with accusations. This is realy mad. I would advise his supporters to caution him and do away with the remarks he had after the pools. He cannot force the voters to vote for him. Period |

They still didn’t give up? I am wondering when they will relies that the election was over for before it even started. Remember what yahya said (god sent me to rule this nations =no bullet and nor volte will get me out here!)Every wise man knows that what he meant (?) (An interesting survivor is the rolls of the poor. by F Furet in year of 1743) The people seldom or never assemble in any riotous or tumultuous manner, unless they are oppressed, or at lest imagine so. So we don’t get it? Wa asalam

I understand Mr Darboe's frustration. It is very normal for politicians to whind and complain once they are defeated. The Gambian people have chosen Yaya Jammeh and for the interest of the Gambia, we should all support this decision. I listened to both Mr. Darboe and Mr. Sallah's interview over BBC and none of them gave a genuine critique which could have reverse the election results. I think Yaya Jammeh did a great job in convincing the Gambian people that he is the best choice.
For Darboe to reject the election results is is unfortunate. Besides the report made by the observers on how the IEC executed a free and fair election which was intimidation-free, Gambians at the grass root level confessed to a well organized eelections.
I hope President Jammeh would embark on this honesty the Gambians have on him and render a wonderful service to this great nation of ours THE GAMBIA. |
