It is certainly a foregone conclusion based on the NADD breakup. However most of here are hoping and praying otherwise. Hopefully the Commonwealth observers on the ground are unbiased and will report the truth. I will go with their final assesment of the whole situation. If they say Jammeh won and the elections were free and fair, then I have no choice but to accept their findings; as it will be the will of the majority. Should they say otherwise, then I expect the opposition parties and all Gambian citizens to launch an agressive campaign to denounce the election results and request another election to be held immediately. Our men and women in the military should be ready to stand up for democracy. I'm not calling for violence, what I mean is that our men/Women in uniform must respect and abide by the law and allow peaceful demonstration to take place as stated in our constitution regardless of their party alignment. Remember without you, Jammeh is nothing.
May God save the Gambia come September 22nd.

Its definitely a forgone conclusion and massive victory for Jammeh and APRC. However the reality nd facts on the ground have been highlighted in the reports as follows:
"But for other Gambians - about 69% of whom live below the poverty line - the rising cost of living is a more pressing issue.
"The roads, schools and the hospitals are all good, but if you don't have your stomach full, you cannot work. If you have no food you cannot learn. We are suffering," says Lamin Karamara, a supporter of Mr Darboe's United Democratic Party alliance.
"We want the country to be changed and we want the price of a bag of rice to be reduced," he explains."
Political science theory does not help this time as ,any average Gambians are not educated to buy party manifestos, accept or understand advocay of proper democracy. Also the FEAR FACTOR is very aggressive in Gambian politics.

We all know that whatever cheap propaganda stunts made by Gainako tomorrow the APRC will win the election. The serious business of running the country will be taken up by Jammeh on 23. There is no room for complacency along the road to vision 2020. As Kobo rightly pointed out inflation needs to be tackled and the cost for the staple foods prices to come down along with a long lists of must does which will fill up the APRC's next five years in government.

Sister Omega its not cheap propaganda. The state organs were highjacked since that fateful day of July 22nd. Its democracy for Jammeh and APRC but there is no proper democracy, accountability and transparency. Jammeh is steering the nation as his personal property and all its citizen must be compelled to favour him or else?
The incumbent has declared that "voting for him and APRC shall guarantee you share of the National cake and development projects and not voting for him and APRC would deny or deprive them share of the National cake and development!" Am of the impression that inducements and these rethorics of blackmail are part of corruption and undemocratic!
However there is no doubt of massive victory for APRC as the opposition parties are in disarray and already undermined themselves.
HAPPY NEW ERA! |

Kobo 1994 was 12 years ago and we can't turn back the wheels of time. We have Gambian's aged between 18 and 23 years old who can't remember life before July 22nd and some will be voting for the first time. There doesn't seem to be another bonifide Gambian model to show as an alternative that is the job for Gambian think tanks to put into operation. The people need know-how to empower themselves and raise their standard of living and more employment to sustain their families and on the ground actions speak louder than words. As reports from Bakau and Serekunda confirm is that their leaders who they have been faithful to have let them down by reneging on their responsibilities in 2001. By cutting and running and they are the ones who are also responsible for the situation their supporters have found themselves in. This situation cannot solely be blamed on the ruling party to monitor themselves all democracies need opposition. The opposition parties didn't stand up and take on their responsibilities in the NA apart from three members. Let's hope this time around they do their jobs and they learn their lessons from the past five years. That opting out of the political process has caused more problems for the democratic process in Gambia than would of occured if they had fully participated within the process.
Darboes stategy clearly backfired on the opposition and it will take time for the opposition to recover from this political immature stance. For responsibilism is key to progress and I agree with you Kobo that all constituencies should be treated equally and not be discriminated against because of their political afiliations.
It's important for the opposition to renter the NA and use their seats to represent their supporters and not use the fourth estate soley to oppose the government this is not its purpose and is also undemocratic trying to sabotage and undermine civil service operations through the backdoor these types operations have backfired. There will be Commonwealth Observers at polling stations from this morning.Let us all hope and pray that all those who are legible to vote do so in peace, they have the right to vote for who they please without fear. It is down to the nation to decide who will be their next President and for their decision to be respected.
Peace Sister Omega.

Sister Omega we can't turn the clock around but there is still a state of anarchy, corruption, rise in poverty, state terror and FEAR (undemocratic, lack of accountability and transparency). All the ELEMENTS far worst than Thailand and even before 1994.
However don't rule out mutiny as "If you rule by the gun beware to be deposed by the gun!" POWER BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE AND A STATE SHOULD NOT BE RUN LIKE YOUR PERSONAL PROPERTY, ARBITARY ARRESTS, DETENTIONS AND A CATALOGUE OF AROCITIES!
Recent elections is just a diplomatic gesture but FEAR IS PREVAILING IN THE ATMOSPHERE!
Lets just pray for a peaceful elections and observe the NEW ERA! |
