UDP/NRP/GPDP Alliance Election Update
Citizens of the Gambia, the world community, Presidential election will be held on Friday, September 22nd, 2006.UDP/NRP/GPDP Alliance, being the leading opposition political force in the country, we would like to bring you an update of the Election Campaign which has being going on for the past three weeks. The Alliance Presidential candidate Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, Hon. Hamat Bah, Hon. Hendry Gomez and other coalition top officials have been on a country wide campaign meeting with Gambians at a Village to Town level in a family fashion and discussing important issues that affect all as citizens of this lovely and wonderful nation. ARC leadership has reminded the electorate to come out in full force on September 22nd, 2006 and exercise their constitutional rights to make a very important and right choice by voting for the human rights lawyer Ousainou Darboe who has a solid record as an advocate of human rights. As a lawyer he could have chosen a much more lucrative career instead of defending students, farmers and the poor. The spontaneous and rapid adherence to the UDP/NRP GPDP Alliance and the tumultuous reception they got throughout the country is a glaring testimony of hardship that Gambians have suffered patiently and silently. They have done it without resistance, and with dignity, not because they do not know their rights but they were waiting for the day that they will be asked to decide their fate. That choice is Friday, September 22nd, 2006. During these rallies, the UDP/NRP/GPDP leadership repeatedly told electorate that this election is about a matter of choice between those who want President Jammeh and his Government to continue on terrorizing Gambians, ban private press, exercise nepotism in all branches of the Government, create regional instability, make the farmers suffer more and those who believe enough is enough Gambians should earn back their respect and dignity.
Intimidation and Arrest
A Gambia Radio and Television reporter Mr. Dudou Sanneh who was assigned to cover the Alliance’s rallies was arrested in Badibu while with the Alliance team. Since then he has been fired and detained. Many believe it has to do with his independent and fair reporting of mass (APRC) supporters’ defection to the Alliance for Regime Change (ARC). An (APRC) Youth leader Buba Bah of Sinchu Alagie defected to the ARC during the Yundum rally with about 80 youths, immediately after the rally he was arrested and detained at the Mile 2 Central Prison. Basse, on September 10, 2006 during the welcoming of Mr. Darboe and the Alliance, into Basse Town over 15,000 people were out in the streets waiting from Nafugan Village to Basse Santa-su. Two youths from Kaba Kamma village were walking along the Basse -Mansajang Army post, singing Lawyer Darboe has won dictator Jammeh were intercepted by three armed guards who arrested and tortured them. One of the youth Junkung Keita suffered a leg fractured. The following morning he was taken before Magistrate Tony Baldeh who granted him bail.
