OPINION A Message to Darboe & the Entire UDP By Yero Jallow (Dalton)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
August 14, 2005 Having followed recent news monger (radio kang kang man Ebrima Jaw Manneh), i love to put on records advice in good faith to Darboe and his associates . What i am saying is it will be very disappointing to see lawyer Darboe and his UDP do any betrayal at this hour of the struggle, for if they do, then the future will have them pay a bitter price. Having watch Darboe, Waa Juwara (former UDP and now NDAM), Syngle Nyassi (UDP) go through all that sufferings, i will never believe any of them or someone in love with them and their party will try a division at this time.
What was shocking and let to separation of Waa and Darboe-immediately after the election, Darboe was taped congratulating Jammeh on the party's behalf before consultation of the UDP committee. Whether it was done out of fear (as the case when he went to the American embassy) or for reconciliation and peace , but still Darboe should have discussed it with his committee members ,knowing very well the nature of that election. In that call, Darboe accepted Jammeh's victory (meaning election was free and fair) and later on started to join others in the irregularities.
For one thing that i know, Barrodi is a brave politician-kill him where you can, skin him or inflict any torture but will remain Waa Juwara. Since at this time, we don't need indebt search for human weakness or error, what we call for though is unity and strength, so please lets all advice -be it our families or friends or our gods (human gods) for the worship or our sponsors whom we owe a lot to be careful in maintaining credibility and human respect. When people critisise them, they should listen and take it as wisdom for their improvement and not see them as enemies or haters.
As far as I am concerned, I don't see Darboe to be power hungry but i find him soft and not the one to battle or counter Jammeh on his arrogance. Not withstanding his relentless service at the high courts, Darboe is just the book person that he is known for-that makes him significant in the struggle. I personally don't go in for debates like Darboe drinks, Darboe this , Darboe that. All we ask from him, as already known to be a rumour for him to maintain the stance. He is indeed with a lot of genuine people. What we are worried about is not NADD being defeated but what is shameful, embarrassing and disappointing is when such people on the verge of being our flag bearers start to show litmus paper reactions. When the unwanted and unprayed for happen, now who will listen to any of them ???
So whether the case as was reported by Ibrima Jaw Manneh -good job Darboe that when contacted said it was news to him but should have been fumed with anger to drive through all those news papers and let the head lines rain in. A leader that is too soft like Darboe is a company in the journey and must be really watchful of any little thing that might be a pinch of an atom-but detrimental to the people. By saying this, we don't ask Darboe to be troublesome (if really so) like Waa , not to be a piece of comedy like uncle Hamat Bah, or too intelligent like the hare (Halifa) but just to be moderate. For come victory with NADD in 2006, whether Darboe leads as the flag bearer or not, his respect and records shall go into history- something that he earned already for his family regardless of the nuts he be loosing here and there.
Ebrima Jaw Manneh, another FJC in the making is a bias and unethical journalist. Whether paid to anger a sinking society or money conscious enough to write tales in newspaper front pages, he should have at the back of his mind that we will not be intimidated by his cheap headlines. Not to mention the little beef that i share with him and his APRC-observer paper over being unfair in reporting news, also on many occasions have lifted stories to suit their own agenda or gain without respecting the source for it. For one thing that i know, when lifting from people's writings , it is very important to report the correct message without an alteration of what they said.
Now look at Sheriff Dibba, fed with candy and minti-toffi, now sits at the national assembly doing rubbish-instructing the clerk of the house to write to Independent electoral commission declaring the seats of Halifa, Sidia, Hamat and Kemeseng vacant. He insulted intelligence, all his struggle went to the garbage and should be prosecuted for violation of our national constitution since he is not above the law. If this is the tour that Darboe or any want to take, then brothers and sisters -lets get mirrors and look through faces a little bit and see if we will be comfortable to look straight to a bothers eye.
And i honestly understand, being away from home and asking those men to be brave enough to withstand the suffering but still it doesn't call for cheap withdrawals. I genuinely ask Darboe to tighten his belt and shame all news mongers. In the Mandinka culture they said "nyi yaa moi huuum , wohtoh feng neh kah sunkang " -meaning when you hear hum or people covering their nostrils, then something smells bad. I want to believe that this news is false and let it be false for ever.
At the end, i advice all to leave everything to the committee and whoever happens to be their trusted choice whether any of those party leaders or neutral person, he should also be our choice regardless of his human weakness and inability to stand the struggle. Avoiding to confuse the committee but hammering them with the truth, it is a genuine cause to critisise any of them just like we are criticising Jammeh and FJC for their notorious ignorance and betrayal to Gambians and humanity at large. If any of them cannot take our criticism, then he need not to start being around there because any who cannot be criticized is a dictator or soon joins a dictator, which is the tears that we are all setting under a Jammeh Gov't. Jammeh says nice things sometimes but still his bad things outweigh the good ones-and the sick man he is , unable to withstand and condone critics made him the notorious dictator.
Something also to signal Darboe on and the entire UDP which led to great lost for votes for the UDP in the last elections is , when Jammeh was using the green boys to succeed, UDP started politics of Mandinka issue, Fula issue and Jola issue. Look, all you need is the votes, so whether a mandinkanised society or fulanised or any of the like, please let those bonds prevail. It was kind of similar to the Jawara regime, when a lot of Mandinkas have always belittled minority tribes like the Jolas or Fulas. When such prevail in a society, we end up having leaders like Jammeh. See, what happened when Jawara was in there -all we were hearing is "innah na bankoh- meaning our country as ownership to kabuu/for the mandinkas" and now that Jammeh is on, all we hear is "mbarri ghum, huula beh foni-meaning belonging to foni". Though from Foni, but i get disturbed that this whole country that belong to all these tribes should only be owned by the foninkas in particular kanilai, Maiyok and its neighbouring villages.
To end this, i want to quote Halifa when he said "citizenship cannot be an accident....", so let's all be proud Gambians and work towards the common good. United we stand, divided we will fall apart and no man will be an island.
