When this reporter spoke to some of them, they expressed their concerns on the situation of the Gambia which made them to be scavenging at Sarro.
"We are here both day and night trying to find something that we can take home for our children. We collect the left over groundnuts and sell, and process the small chips into soap," said one Fatoumatta Gibba. She said that they have been in this business for years and they even sell their groundnuts to Senegal where it is processed into soap. One Momodou Jeng, also said that he has been in the business for many years gets something for his family to pay his children's school fees from this work. He said that there is no other option for them and that is the reason why they are there scavenging for something. Another scavenger, Jainaba Nyabally, said that they collect the groundnuts dumped at Sarro to process it into soap, groundnut paste or to sell it at the market. She however lamented that it is because of the hard economic situation of the country that they took up such an activity for a living. She added that they sometimes spend the night at Sarro working to gathering as much as they can family's up keep. She said that anytime they have a better job they will go in for it.
