Nyarikangbanna, thanks for your response. It appears the rhetoric is cooling down from your last postings. I believe the reality is kicking in and there is no turning back as September 22 is approaching.
The facts are always the facts and no amount of spinning can turn them around. As the saying goes if you break it, you fix it. UPD/NRP broke away because of the leadership selection process. They are in agreement to everything else in the MOU except the selection process, and even that they were in agreement until it looked bleaked on their side.
Now if they come up with a suggestion for selecting a flagbearer, what is the criteria for doing this? Or do they imply that Darboe is already selected and come and join them? If this is what they mean, again why not come out plain and say that? Why hide behind words by putting forward misleading or incomplete proposals? Until you know what you stand for no one will give you the chance to proof yourself.
It has always been my humble belief that had UDP stayed within NADD and complete the selection process, Darboe would have been the ultimate choice with strong conditions that will hold him accountable or give him limited power as the President. However, when the going got tough they bailed out because of all the uncertainties.
One fundamental point UDP supporters fail to understand is that at the end of the day without unity, being majority does not mean anything. How would you guys feel if you fail to unite with NADD and Jammeh wins the elections? What would being the Majority party mean? For several years NCP was majority opposition party. Where are they and their leaders... oh I forgot they are in UDP now sorry.....
The verdict here is that UPD/NRP's proposals are a National embrassement and a desperate move to correct a deadly mistake they made as Hamat admitted. Fellows governing a country is not running a loose association. It requires competence, systematic planning and implementation of short and long term goals. It requires the ability to revisit,re-evaluate and rearm to address circumstances and reality. It would be a disaster for Gambians to hastily put in place a government with blanket amnesty.
The only viable option is for the UPD/NRP to critique the MOU and come up with their objections. That can be the basis for negotiation which can ultimately lead to a flagbearer to contest the elections under a NADD platform. No more fabricated alliances. The MOU is the ultimate foundation to a supreme constitution that guarantees equality and liberty to all Gambians. Anything less is doom for betrayal.
The struggle is a long term one and those who expect immediate rewards will jump off the ship as the waves intensify. Peace

A bold and courageous move by both parties and I most start by commending both parties and mediators for facilitating such an environment. I think we all need to support the said notion and encourage both parties to settle this at their earliest convenience for the sake of our motherland and change.
Good Start.

Its too late Goor. Campaings have already kicked off. Lets prepare ourselves for 2011. We have a lot of time to start working on grey areas. Hopefully we will be better organised. |
