The campaign for the presidential elections in The Gambia will officially start on Thursday, 31st August 2006 and end on Wednesday, 20th September 2006, a press release from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced on Monday July 31st.
During the official campaign period political parties are allowed to hold public meetings and rallies without first seeking permission from the police.
Apart from the cumbersome application process, police are accused of lacking in evenhandedness in the way they treat applications from opposition parties.
