1. THE PRESIDENT AT THE FRANCO AFRICAN SUMMIT AND NOT AT THE COMMONWEALTH SUMMIT

Wednesday, December 11, 2013

WILL THE STATE MEDIA AND OBSERVER ASK HIM

WHAT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DOUBLE STANDARD WHEN HE RETURNS?

France has closed its embassy in the Gambia. It has troops stationed in Africa and has intervened in Mali and did call on African governments to meet in France to strategise on how to intervene in Central Africa Republic and further build an African standby force to intervene where ever it is necessary to deal with conflict. In Central Africa Republic, the French President did not mince his words in emphasising the need to reduce the transitional period and hold elections earlier than expected.

We would like the state media or the Daily Observer to ask President Jammeh whether he supported the French initiative or did express opposition and provided an alternative proposal. He should be asked whether it is the West who has made the combatants to turn against their fellow citizens and start to massacre each other with a brutality that befits only savages?

Was Bosise not a military man and strong leader? Didn’t the opposition criticise his corruption and misrule and turn to war to remove him? Didn’t the new rulers turn around and told the international community that they have lost control over their armed forces? Isn’t the lesson clear that the root cause of external intervention and control is the refusal of African leaders to surrender power to their sovereign people who are the legitimate owners and whose dignity, freedom and prosperity governments should promote to have the legitimacy to rule through their consent? Why should African leaders allow themselves to be taught this lesson by outsiders and then turn around and claim that they are being dictated to?

Interestingly enough, in the name of fighting external control and intervention President Jammeh broke away from the Commonwealth. However, the British still have an embassy in the Gambia. The Commonwealth does not have any intervention force. It is a community of values and utilise persuasive influence to promote those values.

What then is the basis of attending the Franco African Summit by President Jammeh? We are waiting for an explanation.
