WHEN WILL THE PROMISED FREE EDUCATION BE INTRODUCED?
Foroyaa Editorial: Published on Monday, 25 November 2013
Some grade 12 students have to wait until next year to try again to pay exam fees in order to sit to the West Africa Senior Secondary School Certificate examinations because of poverty. It is important to give a picture of the size of the enrolment in our school system. There are 238, 576 pupils enrolled in our primary schools by 2012. 79,901 students are enrolled in our Upper Basic schools. Hence free education would have to be provided for 318,477 who are at the Basic cycle level.
The state could provide free education if sovereign National Wealth is created from revenue from minerals and so on and so forth. However if it wants to rely on taxation and education levies, it would have to scrape the backs of tax payers.
In short, to provide 500 dalasis for each child per annum would mean raising 159 Million dalasis. To provide 1000 dalasis to each child per annum would require raising 318,477 Million dalasis per annum or Three Hundred and Eighteen million, Four Hundred and Seventy-Seven. Where will the money come from to provide free education? That is the question we hope to get an answer for.
