1. Let’s Overcome Fear, BB Dabo Tells Congress

"The Gambia’s former Vice President has urged delegates of the London congress to overcome fear if they want “to get their country out of the ditch.”

Mr. Bakary Bunja Dabo said it was about time that Gambians became a bit rational about fear or risk involved in the struggle to free their country from its present predicament. “We cannot solve our problem if we allow fear to hold us back,” he said quoting the former US President Franklin Roosevelt that “the only thing we have to fear is the fear itself.”

Mr. Dabo, who was elected to chair the London Campaign on Saturday, emphasized the importance of the struggle to bring back democratic change in the Gambia. “The challenge for us is to get our country from the ditch,” he said, adding that “we will have a very little to show to our children if we don’t rise up to the challenge.” Mr. Dabo said the failure to do nothing would tantamount to committing sin or crime.

He took a swipe at Gambian leader for his “quite often irresponsible talks” describing Gambians in the diaspora as “irresponsible and unpatriotic citizens” who are doing menial jobs. “Labour in any form is dignified. Gambian diaspora represent a lot in terms of our moral qualities, professional proven abilities and contribution we are making to our country.” He said such irresponsible talk should be dismissed.

Mr. Dabo described the London Campaign as a “forum which is predominantly devoted to contributing to the ongoing efforts to salvage situation in the Gambia.” He said many Gambians are committed to this task. “We want to contribute to a more focused approach and more adapted structures,” he said, calling for utmost support for a cause since “a successful organization can set in motion a dynamism which will bring more things than what was initially planned.

“We should list the agenda item of contributing to the struggle for the democratic change in the Gambia and make it a business of this organization,” he said. He said since “we are in an emergency situation,” the focus now should be on how to achieve democratic change in the Gambia. “Once we get that out of the way we can take on other tasks.”" SOURCE: KIBAARO NEWS

The London 2013 Congress- By Seedy Ceesay

"On Saturday, May 11, 2013 in the borough of Kentish Town in London, Gambians in large numbers came together to grace the first ever Gambian Congress ever held in London in the United Kingdom.

The aim of the Congress was to unify all organizations within the UK standing in opposition to the outrageous governance and human rights crisis in The Gambia for the last 19 years under the dictatorship of Yahya Jammeh.

The first order of business was in agreeing to the purpose of this nascent organization whose establishment was first proposed earlier in the year at a meeting in London. At that first gathering, the attendees understood the need for this umbrella organization to begin its work and the passion for this purpose was rekindled last Saturday at The London Congress. Attendees were Gambian men who came from all over the UK and gave representation for their respective communities giving opinions for each of the stakeholders’ points of view.

There were a few mentions of the fact that only one Gambian woman attended the Congress. It was agreed upon to encourage women to bring their enlightened ideas to the work. The camaraderie between the various representatives of the Gambian associations formed in the UK was inspiring and showed that with the oppositional groups unifying, a change for the better will be forthcoming. Discussions between all those in attendance were respectful and ended with light applause after each speaker, which was clear evidence of the appreciation for the various ideas brought up.

....the name of the group: “Campaign for Democratic Change in The Gambia”. This name was decided upon since bringing democracy to The Gambia is of utmost concern. The situation in The Gambia is worsening on a daily basis and participants agreed that they would recommit to the struggle with even greater determination and energy, and that they’d refocus the struggles by adopting better strategies aimed at bringing democracy to The Gambia.

As such, the Congress chose leaders as follows:

Chairperson: BB Dabo

The Chair ProTem, Abdullah Bojang, called the meeting to order and passed out the Five Pillars of the umbrella organization describing the duties and responsibilities of these five committees."
