As part of its 10th EDF funding package for The Gambia, the EU provided 3.8Million Euros (3,860,000.00 Euros) to the country to improve the capacity of her government and people to adopt to an increasing climate variability and change taking place in the country.
The specific objectives of the funding are to:
1. Strengthen the national capacity levels in terms of planning and response to climate change impacts on Gambia's coastal areas;
2. Contribute to mainstreaming climate change into the country's development policies and planning.
School Feeding Programme
The EU have also provided 2.6Million Euros (2,640,000.00 Euros) through the UN Relief Agency, the World Food Pragramme (WFP) to support the latter's school feeding programme in The Gambia.
The programme, which started in the wake of the 2008 food crisis in The Gambia, aimed at mitigating the impact of food crisis in The Gambia. The programme was however hitherto limited to the rural areas of The Gambia.
The EU funding support not only helped sustain this programme but also helped extended it to the urban areas which were also severely affected by the 2008 food crisis. It provided nutritious breakfast and lunch to approximately 52,500 school children and thereby improved learning, attendance and enrolment in primary schools, particularly of girls. The funding is also paying for Vulnerability Analysis and Mapping of the food security situation in The Gambia.
The support is part of EU's commitment to UN's Millennium Development Goal initiative under which the EU intends to provide 7.6Million Euros through the WFP from 2012-2015 with the sole aim of ending hunger in The Gambia by 2015 in line with UN's Millennium Development Goal.
Technical Cooperation and Capacity Building
Meanwhile, the EU have also provided 5Million Euros between 2008-2012 to The Gambia and under the 10th EDF Country Strategy, to help bolster the capacity of the country's National Authorising Officer Support Unit (NAOSU)of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs.
The objective is to enable NAOSU to effectively coordinate, implement and monitor EU sponsored development projects in the country. The funding specifically helped provide training and studies for local staff, conferences and seminars linked to the programming of EU support interventions, financial management and compliance with EDF procedures. This is to ensure that EU's development aid/assistance reach the intended beneficiaries, the Gambia people, and in the prescribed manner, and also to upgrade governments efficiency in project formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
The funding was delivered in two phrases; 3Million Euros (3,005,000.00 Euros) was delivered under Technical Cooperation Facility 1(TCF1)and almost 2Million Euros (1,995,000.00 Euros) was provided under TCF2.
The above three separate funding when added together gives a cumulative total of 11.5Million Euros of the European tax payer money given to The Gambia on the basis of the Cotonour Agreement. It is these kinds of EU benevolence and empathy for the Gambia people that stands to suffer if not completely annihilated if The Gambia Government abandoned the dialogue mechanism put in place by the Cotonou Agreement and under Article 8 of the same. The money involved is clearly no chicken change by any standard.
Thanks

Here again Nyarikangbanna has enlightened us by his research into EU funding to Gambia, how can there be a problem for the Gambian people?

Here is a link to Article 8 of the Cotonou Agreement:

It's all getting a bit beyond me now ,not being a politico myself I can see this going round and round in ever decreasing circles,until................... let's wait until Nyarikangbanna has completed his/her research and given us simple folk a clear English translation of the politico speak. |

Toubab, I have two to three more things to report involving big money. So stay tune to my euroleaks.
Gambians stand accused of being an ungrateful bunch if we don't tell the truth to our government.
