As part of their response to the severe food crisis in the Sahel region and following Gambia's declaration of drought and crop failure for the 2011-2012 harvest season, the EU provided 1.5Million Euros through the UN Relief Agency, the World Food Programme (WFP) to support Gambia government's food security efforts. According to the EU, the funds had enabled the WFP to:
1. Purchase 386 metric tons of micronutrient-fertified vegetable oil enough to feed 206,000 people for two months;
2. Undertake distribution of supplementary food to 25,000 children at risk of malnutrition over a period of 3 months;
3. Transport 500 metric tons of rice from Brazil, enough to feed 13800 beneficiaries for over a period of 3 months.
It is to be noted that this support did not form part of the 77.9Million Euros allocated to The Gambia under the 10th EDF for the period 2008-2013. It was part of EU's Emergency Food Assistance for the Sahel Region. The 10th EDF funding is Development Aid for The Gambia.
Thanks
