On another topic there was some discussion about taxes. Could the Bantaba members explain the tax system in the Gambia (or give the link).

Some questions I have :
Is there a tax on the income (salary) and what are the rates,
Is there a tax on possessions
Do businessess pay taxes, and if so how is that organised?
Who gets the contributions (the state, the local governments, ..)

I know there is a huge informal economy in the Gambia. Do they pay taxes ?

well i think its more or less like the British tax system. there is personal tax and everyone has to be cleared mostly at the end of the year. you need this clearances to renew your drivers licence etc.

ofcourse there is income tax, most people who have formal employment pay.unfortunately most transactions happen without receipts so there is a lot of lost income for government. the forms are at the Income tax offices and i think they also allow self assessment. i'm not sure.

if you have a company you will pay tax depending on many factors(profits, investment etc). if its a small business then you will pay both a local government tax and income tax.

people in the informal sector just pay daily tax to the area council where they operating like at the market etc.

if you're a non-gambian you also have expat living or working in the gambia then you will pay expat tax and resident permits etc

i dont know the exact figues as they had a new law recently.
