I suppose this should be in the tourism thread but nobody seems to visit it, so..

Gambia could, with a bit more thought, benefit from music tourism. It's easily accessible from London (which itself is easily accessible from everywhere else), peaceful, geared up for tourism etc. I went to the Beres Hammond gigs while out there a month or so ago and apart from a few things, it was the most wonderful thing. Dancing to beautiful music under the warm African skies, oh bliss. The sound system was perfect, my mates were busy providing Ital food for the entourage, people set up grill and drinks stalls both inside and out and I suspect quite a few locals made a pretty penny out of the whole thing.

The things that do need addressing are these; the tickets (whilst being cheap for me) were obviously not cheap enough for the average Gambian. Given that the trip was sponsored by various companies such as Africell, couldn't there be cheap or free tickets for Gambians? Beres had already completed a European tour and I doubt he made much profit from Gambia even with the tickets out of range for most Gambians so why not just let the music be for the people?
And following on from this, have the police no idea of crowd control? It seems pretty obvious that crowds will congregate outside the area if they can't afford to get in, just to hear the music. Firing tear gas (or whatever it was) into the crowd AFTER the inevitable crowd control issues arise is hardly crowd control.

glad you enjoyed the concert, your comments on ticket prices are correct not just for this concert but other events as well, it would be nice if locals could enjoy some of the events.
tear gas into the crowd!!, they should not let the crowds get the close of grow so big. I went to a football match and was scared not of the police but the unruliness of the crowd one trip causes a stampede.
