Timbuktu on Unesco danger list
28 June 2012

Mali's historical city of Timbuktu is put on the UN cultural agency's danger list as violence in the country's north escalates.

Unesco, the UN's cultural agency, said both Timbuktu and the 17th Century Tomb of Askia, which is in the city of Gao, had been placed on its list of sites in danger.

Islamist forces have just seized Gao from Tuareg rebels.

Unesco said it was also worried about looting and smuggling of artefacts.

People should be allowed to believe in anything they like,so long as such beliefs do not hurt or constrict the beliefs of any other person who like them are allowed their own beliefs, but forever it has been the case that these concepts of free belief are very often supressed often by killing and other unacceptable means, this quote from Momodous posted article from the BBC highlights this:

"Last month, al-Qaeda linked Islamist fighters were reported to have destroyed the tomb of a local Muslim saint in Timbuktu.
Strict Islamists regard shines as idolatrous, while some Muslims, especially Sufis, regard them as an accepted part of Muslim worship."

"It is not only the slave or serf who is ameliorated in becoming free... the master himself did not gain less in every point of view,... for absolute power corrupts the best natures." (Alphonse Marie Louis de Prat de Lamartine. France and England: a Vision of the Future was published in London in 1848 )

Toubab, go tell these terrorists.

I don't recognise your last quote from the article though. Who is Alphonse Marie Louis de Prat de Lamartine?

Thought you would pick that up, you always like quoted sources, quite right to, I choose this frenchman because he was APPARENTLY the first person to coin such a phrase, here is where I got the info,as you know by now I am a simple person and an expert on nothing.
I felt that the words allegedly used by this frenchman fitted the topic better than the quotation I searched on.

Have a search on Google, you can find, "About 665,000 results"

Oh dear, getting a little now,or maybe bored

This is about Tumbuktu and the possible distruction of history by bandits but I am afraid the topic is already being derailed.

Momodou, you know that there is a bigger problem than the destruction of a very very historic place ,it is a war between two major factions with differing beliefs,I would suggest that it is a fight for power, the choice, good and bad,as you said previously "Toubab, go tell these terrorists."

Me also, you remember that sometime ago we had a small discussion about historic houses in Banjul being torn down, instead of being looked after as Cultural Heritage as they should be.

Timbuktu shrines damaged by Mali Ansar Dine Islamists
30 June 2012

Islamist fighters in Mali have damaged the shrines of Muslim saints in the city of Timbuktu, witnesses say.

The fighters, from the Ansar Dine group, which controls much of northern Mali, attacked the mausoleum of Sidi Mahmoud, one of 16 shrines in the city.

Last week, the UN cultural organisation Unesco put Timbuktu on its list of endangered world heritage sites, fearing damage following the coup which toppled the Malian government in March.

Islamists regard shrines as idolatrous.

However, some Muslims, especially Sufis, regard them as an accepted part of Muslim worship.

'Architectural wonders'

Witnesses said Islamist fighters began attacking the shrines on Saturday morning, using shovels and pickaxes.

"This is tragic news for us all," Unesco chairperson Alissandra Cummins said in a statement to the AFP news agency. "I appeal to all those engaged in the conflict in Timbuktu to exercise their responsibility."

Islamist militants in Mali have attacked one of the most famous mosques in the historic city of Timbuktu, residents say.
Armed men broke down the door of the 15th-Century Sidi Yahia mosque, a resident told the BBC.
The Ansar Dine group, which is said to have links to al-Qaeda, seized control of the city earlier this year.

Just looking at the pictures that Modo posted above you can actually feel the history there ... I for one would have loved to have been able to visit Timbuktu and experience this in person.

It is beyond sad ... just like the destruction of the Bamiyan Statues by the Taliban
