It has been announced in the radio news this morning that the Annual Gunjur Ziyarat has been forbidden this year by the President's office.

Seedy Ali Janneh is from Gunjur and usually attends the event.

Annual Muslim religious event organised by communities at various loccal settlements. That of Gunjur is high profile, drawing large attendance. It runs at no cost to state resources and totally non-violent. Not even one police presence required. Government has never been part of decision or planning of such event. Coming from president's office came so unsual.

Karamba, I understand that the Gunjur ‘Ziyarat’ (Salutations) is annualy organised by Imam Baba Leigh and fellow Tijani followers who go there to pray for Sheikh Omar Futiyou Taal.

So what is Gamo?

Why do you think the President wants it band? Is he just worried about larger groups of people coming together?

Tamsier has once explained here that “Gamo comes from the old Serere word Gamohou...... . an ancient divination festival”
Today Gamo is a synonymous to Maulud an occasion where presentation of sermons and recitations of the Qur'an are held.

Its puzzling why the President's office should interfere in people's way of belief and yet they can use state resources to celebrate the presidents birthday and other festivals in Kanilai yearly.

Folks I am back after being away for so long due to some very hectic schedules.By the way I personally think the president is very envious of the huge amount of people this particular ziyareh continuous to pull every year and because the organisers are known for their firm stand in telling the truth as it is which for some reasons hurts Dictator jammed. He is concern that this event is a reflection of the people's loyalty to the organiser and decides to nip it off. This decision is not independent of the supreme Islamic council jammed sycophants Lamin Touray and Abdoulie fatty. This two are a shame to Islam and the whole country. Dictator yaya Jammeh have twisted their tongues with money and material and in the process, they are now worshiping Yaya instead of God. What a shame!!!

hi there, i am not understanding the reason for the cancellation, a religious festival is just that. How many years has it been going.
I have friends who go to the Christian festival in December, near Brufut, Kucachange, Mariam Kunda. Catholi Secretarite organise it.

I would hate for that to be cancelled.

can you imagine the conversations if the President cancelled it.
