"The former National Assembly member for Wuli West Hon. Sidia Jatta held a press conference yesterday 23rd April 2012 at the People’s Center in Churchill’s town to thank the people of Wuli for all the years they have been standing by PDOIS.
He told the press that the group of six opposition parties has not participated in the just concluded national assembly elections in order not to legitimize the long standing unleveled political landscape. According to him at a certain point to condone what is wrong by participating in without precondition is to legitimize it.
Hon. Jatta made these assertions in a Press Conference to thank the people of Wuli as a whole and the Wuli West in particular for having been consistently and fervently supporting his candidature with commitment for fifteen good years.
Hon. Jatta told the press that he became an elected member of the national assembly for the whole of Wuli on PDOIS ticket in 1997 to 2002.
In 2002 he said, Wuli was divided into two and that is Wuli East and Wuli West and that the whole constituents of Wuli decided that the late Mamadi Jabai stand for PDOIS in Wuli East and that he (Sidia) would stand in Wuli West.
Sidia, a long term serving member of the National Assembly told journalists that in that parliamentary election which was held in 2002, his party (PDOIS) won with a resounding victory. However he said, before the end of that term which was his second term as an elected member under a PDOIS ticket, a by-election was held in 2005 which he won under a NADD ticket.
Sidia told the press that it is important for him to say few words about NADD or the different political arrangements his party has had to go into; arrangements he said which were not motivated by position seeking but by the fact that section 48 (3) of the Constitution has been amended which stipulated that if no candidate attains more than 50% of the votes validly cast in a presidential election, there should be a second round of voting in which the two candidates with the largest number of votes would contest. Sidia pointed out that since this section has been expunged from the constitution, opposition political parties had to think of ways of joining their forces with a view to combat abuse of incumbency. He noted that that is what brought NADD under whose ticket he has been in the national assembly from 2005 to 18 April 2012. He added that that is also what brought about the United Front during the 2011 Presidential Elections.
Sidia told the press that his mandate as a member of the national assembly ended on Wednesday 18 April 2012 in compliance with section 99 (1) of the 1997 constitution of the republic, a day before the first session of the National Assembly which took place on the 19th April 2012.
Hon. Jatta stated that when they formed their party (PDOIS) in 1986, their fundamental objective was to bequeath to the young generation a country with a level and just political landscape conducive to multiparty political contest, where people will be free to express their sovereign will in determining who to choose as their public trustees, but he said for 26 years the political landscape is far from being leveled and just. Sidia noted that they prefer to struggle to create a level and just political landscape conducive to multiparty political contest, than to have five or six national assembly members who cannot influence anything in the national assembly due to numbers. Sidia concluded by saying that the main essence of the press conference was to thank the people of both Wulis for having weathered tremendous political storms with them throughout those years and that no amount of intimidation, arrests and detentions deterred them from expressing their sovereign will consciously, choosing a representative, a public trustee of their own choice.
The Wuli former NAM told Journalists that they have submitted a fourteen point memorandum to the IEC demanding for a level and just political landscape conducive to multiparty political contest and they the IEC responded point by point agreeing to everything they’ve written and promised to do something.
However Sidia said, during their last meeting with the IEC which was on the 7th of March, the eve of the first day of nomination they the group of six saw the need to call on the IEC to postpone the National Assembly elections so that they the IEC and the stakeholders could agree concretely on how to address those issues of abuse of incumbency.
Sidia noted that that was their position and the IEC said they cannot postpone the election and therefore pushed the group of six from participating in the elections.
He said elections laws are made to be obeyed and if an election body shows that they cannot enforce the laws governing elections, then how can such an election body be credible? He asked." |

Sidia made valid observation regarding how the opposition has been used to aiding an illegal coup maker government with sham elections. "Enough is enough", said Sidia. |
