I have just seen that Bantaba in Cyberspace Logo is illegaly desplayed on The Gambian Society in New York, Inc website as their logo.

Can someone tell me who are behind this organisation?

This is very unprofessionally done because in an advance society like the US, one cannot just steal another company's Trade Mark and use it like that. I have written to them and asked for the removal of it and hope that they respect my request.

The Gambian Society in New York, Inc is a registered 501(c)(3) charitable community-based organization with the mission of helping the Gambian immigrant community in the New York metropolitan area adjust to life in the United States by providing resources and support in health care, education, culture, and economics.

Founded by a group of dedicated Gambian immigrants in November 1994, the Society was incorporated in the state of New York on November 6th 1995. Our office has also relocated in August 2009 from 1230 Jerome Avenue, to its new headquarters at 1500 Boston Road, in the Crotona Park section of the Bronx.

They have existed for 17 years, the same age with AFPRC /APRC. Yet they could not come up with a genuine clean logo. There are many missing details on the site, suggesting they are not as it as claimed. Here is what they wrote on the site:

"In our seventeen years of continuous service and outreach to the
Gambian immigrant community, the Gambian Society has provided a host of absolutely free services to families and individuals including Adult Literacy Program; which by far has been the most popular and successful of our endeavors since in operation. The Gambian Society in New York has been significantly successful in serving recent African immigrants (particularly Women) who had little opportunity for formal education in their homelands. We have partnered and consistently work with the Community Advisory Board of the New York City Health & Hospitals Corporation, the New York State Assembly, and the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD)."

To steal a trademark the logo would need to have been registered as a trademark.

You're looking at copyright infringement or at least you would be if you had a copyright notice on every page (normally seen in the footer). This is called 'self copyright'. You can still register it for around $30-350 depending on how you register it. The cheapest way would be direct $30-60.

I'd save that web-page whilst the logo is still named the same as yours Momodou:

Them: http://www.gambiansocietynyc.org/images/logoan_gambia_500x280.gif
You: http://camara.dk/images/logoan.gif

Then either have the logo trademarked (if it passes as original work), get the logo protected under copyright or 'self copyright' and then delete this post. Then hit them with some fire and declare that the 'self copyright' has always been in place.

I wouldn't care who the charity or support group was for who was stealing my work, stealing is stealing!

Good luck.

Nokia Man, thank you for the advice. I have all the original art work and its also documented in the old Gambia-L archives which I have somewhere.

I spoke to someone in New York who knows the people behind but they do not seem to care.

gambiabev,
One very important thing to bear in mind is that America has a booming industry in litigation and very many very expensive lawyers and court fees can be excessive, once you embark on the legal road,it may be difficult to turn back without losing loads of money, these people are not lawyers for nothing ,they love money!

Momodou, yes the bantaba in cyberspace logo infringement is a travesty and the Gambian Society in New York should make one of their own. By stealing your logo, they are sending out a negative message about themselves. In order for people to donate to their charity. The public has to be able to entrust money to them. If they are blatantly using your logo without your permission. Then why should people entrust or believe they do what they say they do?

Peace
