| I am about, thanks for the concern I have returned from Gambia, where many are crying about the cost of essentials, the culture of thinking that a toubab is a walking bank has increased considerably MOST people are suffering from despair, the Gambia at this time is not a very happy place despite the usual smiles, tourists are coming and going.Remittances have fallen from those abroad, due to the current world financial problems, the ferries are still running ,just, and there are materials and plant at the terminal in Banjul to make docking of the larger ferries possible, although I have not seen the recently acquired ferries myself it is rumoured that they are not a drive on drive off type but have only one entry and exit, meaning that vehicles can enter forwards but will have to reverse off, this may not be correct or modifications may be in hand to solve this,I hate to think of the problems of Gambian driven vehicles trying to reverse off a ship!. |

Its good to see you back Toubab.
Thanks for the brief update. I have some photos/video of those ferries somewhere and will show them later. They are used ferries from Bulgaria and still had the original vessel names welded on the hull the time I saw them. |

Nice to hear from you, Toubab. Atleast you didn't do a "M E" on us, but rather, been basking under the Gambian sunshine. Some gloomy observations you made, but as the saying goes: Gambia, No Problem........................................................lol!

The very sad thing is that MANY believe that there is No Problem but all are asking for an invitation letter or a holiday in Europe "only for 2 weeks" personally at the moment I am wondering if I shall ever return to a place that I have long considered my second home,a sad prospect and distressing .

Toubab, great to hear from you and that you visited the home land. It helps to see the reality for yourself.
Thanks for the update from Banjul...
On the issue of "Gambia NO Problem" it needs to be understood that it is actually a cultural norm. People and families are so private that they always want to keep their secrets within themselves and or a close circle of friends and family.
So even if people are suffering or don't have anything to eat or their marriages and families are falling apart, they will still rather die in private than expose themselves to the general public...
As compared to western culture which is more open, you can meet a stranger today in the US, UK or other places and they will disclose their family background, difficult childhood or relationships with a short period of time. To get that from a Gambian or other African you will have to be a trusted confidant...
So I hope that helps clarify things on the "Gambia No problem" It is a myth and sometimes it makes sense to not disclose your personal problems to someone who may not be able to help you!
Welcome back and I hope you had a nice Christmas break and you are ready for a blessed new year...
We certainly missed Moe, The watchman and many others... politics is over but life continuous.
