I have seen Osprey in Scotland. Last night a saw part of a TV programme that followed an Osprey's journey from Wales to Senegal. They caught up with the very same Osprey. How amazing! Are there Osprey sites in Gambia? If so, whereabouts? It is amazing to think about the journey they take. Are they protected in Gambia? I'd really appreciate any information.
sure there are ospreys in the Gambia. I've seen plenty of them in the mangroves around Banjul but also up river and in the Sine Saloum (north bank).
I guess they are protected and its seems Gambians respect those wildlife rules. The Gambia is famous for its birdlife and a lot of tourists are interested in birdwatching.
The subsahara countries are very interesting for birdwatching because you the typical african fauna and a lot of european species hibernate in the subsahara. Those hibernating species have their breeding grounds up to the upper northern parts of Europe and return each year back to the subsahara at the end of july, august and september. Typical species are of course several species of swallows and most of the stilts.
The journey for those birds is dangerous. They have to cross France, Spanje, Portugal , Italy, etc where hunting is a national sport . If they survive this they have to cross the mediterranean and then the Sahara.
