Prisoners have been subjected to exploitative work conditions to feed industry. This practice is known to be taking place in America and and China, the world's biggest economies. In China, exploitation of prisoner is near slave labour scale while in America, prisoners are used in producing high tech goods. Where do we go with standards of corporate social responsibility and ethical fair dealings in trade and industry ?
Crime of any type not condoned. Use of prisoner labour for profit making is an issue. Prisoners may have legal obligation to be under custody. Does that bind them to serve business income generating role ?
In Gambia prisons do carry out street cleaning, farming, and fuel wood fetching. Part of it is to contribute towards their daily needs.
