This new care for the forests and environment is very commendable and so new,and not yet regulated properly ,ah........... yes.......... trees make money, hmmmmmmmm,"who are making millions of dalasis to the detriment of the whole country".Do I smell an unexploited business opportunity for someone in a position of authority ?
Of course not how could I be so cynical to even think such a thing,

Police seize 8 truckloads of timber in LRR
Africa » Gambia
Tuesday, October 18, 2011
Police in the Lower River Region (LRR) Thursday impounded eight truckloads of timber in Mansakonko. The trucks, which were said to be heading towards the Kombos, where intercepted at the Bureng Police checkpoint, when the officers suspected that the logs were obtained illegally from the forests of LRR and CRR.

This reporter saw the eight trucks loaded with the logs at the premises of Mansakonko Police Station on Friday. Alhaji Lamin Waa Juwara, the governor of LRR condemned the activities of those engaged in the illegal exploitation of the country’s forest resources.

He said the logs are suspected to have been obtained illegally from the forests of Jarra, Upper Fulladu and Jimara in the Upper River Region. He lamented that illegal logging has now become rampant in his region, with many people engaged in it on a daily basis.

He noted that some of the trees have been felled to the extent that they have now become an endangered species due to the activities of some unpatriotic individuals who are making millions of dalasis to the detriment of the whole country.

Governor Juwara highlighted the need for communities especially those in LRR to take ownership of the forest by making sure that the forest resources are protected from exploitation.

“We should all make sure that the few unpatriotic individuals within our midst stop causing deforestation of our natural resources,” he stressed.

He finally called on the security apparatus and forest officials to be on the alert so as to nab and bring to justice anyone found illegally exploiting the country’s forest resources, especially illegal felling down of trees.

Ousman Jatta, the police commissioner of LRR said the matter is being investigated.
