THE DAILY NEWS Chief Ebrima Manneh’s Disappearance: A state of Confusion

"Wednesday, October 19, 2011

Dawda Faye, a judicial correspondent of THE POINT newspaper holds Justice Minister Edu Gomez by his throat in this daring article of his.

He says, “The minister of Justice, Edward Gomez, is doing injustice to Chief Ebrima Manneh’s family and the entire media fraternity by not revealing where Chief Ebrima Manneh is being detained, yet he does not want any body to call him Injustice Minister. This is my submission!”
When President Jammeh had a meeting with some media chiefs at State House, he told them that journalist Chief Ebrima Manneh might have died in an attempt to go through the back way to Europe for greener pasture, and that his government is not responsible for his death.
But the Minister of Justice, Edward Gomez, said in an interview that in a degree of certainty that Chief Ebrima Manneh is alive and he is somewhere.

These two statements contradict each other. Which is the true fact about Chief Ebrima Manneh’s case?

When the minister of Justice, Edward Gomez, was a private lawyer, he represented and defended one Modou Manga, who was charged with stealing some bags of rice, belonging to the Kanilai Rice Store.

On August 13, 2009, he told the court in defence of his client: “The accused was granted bail eleven months ago and he is still being detained at Mile 2 prisons. Your worship, this has infringed his constitutional right. The detention of my client is a violation of his constitutional right. This goes against section 99 of the CPC (criminal procedure code). The detention of my client is a mockery of justice.”

He should have said the same for Chief Ebrima Manneh, since he said that he is not being detained by the government. He only said he is somewhere but did not denounce those who are detaining him.

When Minister Gomez was a lawyer, he seemed to be a champion of human rights in the courts. He would use his rhetoric and eloquent style of speaking to safeguard the constitution. But it seems that rhetoric of his are fading in the case of Chief Ebrima Manneh.

But if we could remember there was an Australian national who was kidnapped in The Gambia and the government quickly mounted an investigation to trace him out.

Within a short period of time, the government was able to trace him out and apprehended the culprits.

If the government could do it for a foreigner, why didn’t it do the same for Chief Ebrima Manneh, who is a Gambian?

According to the interview with The Daily News, the Justice Minister is quite sure that Chief Ebrima Manneh is alive and he is somewhere. He has declined to reveal where Chief Ebrima Manneh is being detained.
If he is being detained in The Gambia, can’t the government intervene and save or rescue Chief Ebrima Manneh since they denied that he is under their detention?

On the other hand, if Chief Ebrima Manneh is being detained out of the country, can’t the government of The Gambia negotiate his freedom?
It is now five years Chief Ebrima Manneh’s family has been waiting to see their son, the breadwinner of the family.

Because of his disappearance, his parents live in pain, trauma and hardship. Is this not pathetic?

The minister of Justice, Edward Gomez, is doing injustice to Chief Ebrima Manneh’s family and the entire media fraternity by not revealing where Chief Ebrima Manneh is being detained, yet he does not want any body to call him Injustice Minister. This is my submission!

DAILY NEWS FAJ Quotes Justice Minister: ‘Chief Manneh Went to U.S’

"Friday, October 21, 2011

Bit by bit, Gambian justice minister Edu Gomez is revealing his knowledge about the whereabouts of missing journalist Chief Ebrima Manneh.

Minister Edu Gomez is quoted as saying that Chief Manneh left the country and the government has evidence from Interpol that the journalist went to the US but he did not specify the destination city.

“We challenged the minister to provide the evidence from Interpol and he promised to make it available to us during this session,” said Omar Faruk Osman, president, Federation of African Journalists (FAJ)

He added: “Minister Gomez claimed that his government is a victim of a smear campaign designed to ‘tarnish its image’. He accused Manneh of “stage-managing his disappearance for mischievous reasons.”

The meeting is said to take place in Banjul on the sidelines of the ongoing NGO Forum, which is preceding the 50th Ordinary session of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR).

Until his disappearance in 2006, Chief Ebrima Manneh was pro-government Daily Observer’s presidential affairs correspondent. He is reportedly being detained by Gambia government, but government denied the allegations.

Though his government denied any knowledge of the missing journalist, Gambian president Yahya Jammeh had suggested that journalist Manneh is dead.

But his justice minister confidently declared during an interview with this paper that the journalist, who is thought to be dead, is alive somewhere, but not in the custody of his government.

“Until we receive and verify the alleged Interpol report, we shall maintain our demand to the Gambian government for the release of Chief Manneh,” FAJ president however said.

Meanwhile, Minister Gomez could not be reached for comments at the time of going to press. "

Foroyaa National News : Chief Manneh’s Father Speaks

"The father of Chief Ebrima Manneh, a Gambian journalist whose whereabouts remain unknown ever since his mysterious disappearance five years ago spoke to this paper about the recent comments of the Justice Minister about his son that has been published by the Newspapers in the country and captured in the Online Newspapers.

The family of Chief Ebrima Manneh was met and the comments made by the Justice Minister were related to them. They were surprised by the comments. They were asked whether they are in touch with the Justice Minister.

“I don’t even know the Justice Minister and have never seen a delegation from him,’ said Chief Manneh’s father, Sarjo Manneh.

The old man has lamented the hardship and pain he underwent in search of his son for the past five years. He questioned the possibility of a person disappearing in a small country like ours and cannot be traced for five years. He said he had gone the length and breadth of the country looking for his son.

“If the government said they have no hand in my son’s disappearance then why can’t they send a delegation to clear their name to us?” asked the old man.

He told this reporter that since the disappearance of Ebrima Chief Manneh in 2006, nobody came to meet them about his son except the press union and the international bodies. He said he has made several attempts to meet the President and the Vice President about his son but all the attempts had failed. He said he heard the President’s comment about his son when the Media chiefs met him at the State House and is still wondering how his son could have left the country without his knowledge.

Meanwhile, he was asked what he would want to tell the Justice Minister about his recent remarks on his son. He said he would want to meet the Justice Minister in person.

“How did he know my son is alive? Where is he kept? Why does it have to take all these long years to find my son? Why is it that his statement and the president are not the same?” asked Sarjo Manneh.

I have the utmost sympathy with the father Sarjo Manneh. IF Ebrima Chief Manneh has found his way to the US in an unconventional way,it is hard to understand, bearing in mind the strong family values that Gambians have, that he has been unable to communicate with his family for more than 5 years.

How can chief Manneh be in the US for such this long period and even the father knew nothing about?

Come on guys Gambia is now full of roumours with lies springing with full HAMATTAN WIN blowing from STATE HOUSE and KANILAI PALACE that most people lie without even knowing it.

Most senior high profile lies, comes from the chief liar who unfortunately happens to be leading the Gambia.

Now imagine how many junior lies would emanate a day?

Gambia needs clencing.

JOLLOF ON-LINE NEWS Senator Durbin Presses Gambia on Chief Ebrima Manneh

"Thursday, 03 November 2011 22:30

Sen. Dick Durbin

(Enewpf) - Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-IL) sent a letter yesterday to the Gambian Attorney General, Edward Gomez, requesting information about Chief Ebrima Manneh, a Gambian journalist who has been missing for more than five years. According to recent comments by Attorney General Gomez, Manneh, who many worried had died while in Gambian custody, is alive.

“I am writing to request immediate information regarding Chief Ebrima Manneh, a Gambian journalist with the Daily Observer who has been missing since a troubling detention by Gambian security personnel more than five years ago. In light of your recent comments claiming that Manneh is alive -- a stark contrast from previous Gambian government silence and denials regarding his whereabouts -- I ask that you immediately provide any information regarding Manneh’s location and condition,” Durbin wrote to AG Gomez.“If Chief Manneh is, in fact, alive, and you do have knowledge of his whereabouts, helping to resolve his disappearance could add credibility to your recent comments at the 50th session of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights, during which you spoke of the need to “speak out against human rights abuses.” Sadly, without an immediate accounting for Mr. Manneh, those words will ring hollow in Gambia and around the world.”
Durbin also wrote to British Foreign Secretary William Hague, expressing his strong support for the United Kingdom’s role in investigating Chief Manneh’s case.

Durbin wrote; “I respectfully ask you to investigate Chief Manneh’s disappearance and urge you to continue to press the Gambian government to respect its international commitments as a member of both the UN and the Commonwealth in this case.”

Chief Manneh was reportedly detained in July 2006 for political reasons by plainclothes police officers thought to have been from the Gambian National Intelligence Agency. Some reports suggest that he has being held at the Fatoto Police Station in eastern Gambia, at Mile Two Prison, or a National Intelligence Agency compound in Serekunda. In July 2007, he was also reportedly escorted by members of the Gambian Police Intervention Unit to the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital in Banjul for high blood pressure treatment. He has not been seen since.

Both the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice and the UN Human Rights Council’s Working Group on Arbitrary Detention have called for the immediate release of Mr. Manneh.

Durbin, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights, has been pressing for Chief Manneh’s release for several years.

Toubab, with all seriousness we cannot make jokes of this youngman's disappearance. How could he be in the United States with all these writings and fightings and remain mute?

For your information Chief Manneh's blood brother who was in the army and who himself was imprisoned for a long time is in the US and we are in touch with him.

If Chief Manneh was alive why would that brother not dismiss any rumours of the youngman's death? If you want to talk to him send me a private message and I will give you his phone number...

This government is simply playing with the lives of the Gambian people and others still sit and make jokes out of it... It is not funny and the government will be held accountable for his disappearance.

Thanks

Baldeh,I was quite shocked by your comment that I would make a joke about this affair,In my posting you have quoted (the link was from 2008) points out that he probably made connections with people in the US because:
" leaving to take up a new assignment at the Embassy of the United States of America, in Banjul. "
who MAYBE would be in a position to enable him to leave Gambia, you have failed to quote my posting of 24th October 2011 ( above) in which I admit that it is unlikely that he is in the US.and I expressed my sympathy to family members.
I note as I am sure that you did that this matter has reached high levels in the US and UK as pointed out in Kobo's post of 3rd November (above)
Thanks.
