Ousted Siffoe VDC Executive Members Detained Over Damaged Borehole Friday, September 23, 2011 Ousted for embezzling over US$10, 000.00 of village funds, some ex-executive members of the Village Development Committee (VDC) of Siffoe, in an apparent protest against their removal, have allegedly damaged the village’s borehole, triggering acute water shortage. Police in the Kombo South village had detained at least three ex-VDC members: Mr Janko Jabang, ex-chairman, Batou Demba, ex-operator and Saikou Sanyang, ex-collector, but released them on bail on Monday September 12, The Daily News gathered from highly placed sources at the village. The months long chaotic political situation in Siffoe, a village in the West Coast region of The Gambia is yet to be resolved. The alkaloship crisis – a power struggle between a younger brother and a son to the retiring village headman - is now said to be almost over, but that of the VDC, a body established by law to serve as entry points to development at village levels, appears to the simmering, though low. The current executive was overwhelmingly endorsed last month despite former alkalo’s initial denial on grounds that it comprises some opposition loyalist, but it is still facing some defiance from the immediate past VDC executive, who are reluctant to hand over relevant documents among others. And the destruction of the borehole is believed to the latest show of defiance by the former executive, who is spared prosecution, thanks to the retiring alkalo, who had prevailed on the authorities to allow the matter to be settled at the village level, our sources said. “The situation is worrying,” says Mr Kawsu Darboe, the current VDC chairman. “Since September 1, 2011, we have not been accessing clean water,” said, Mr Kawsu Darboe. “We draw water from wells that had been abandoned by the villagers.” Already, a technician has assessed the damage, our sources say, revealing further that about D48, 000.00 is needed to repair it. That sum, according to the villagers, is not in their disposal or possession and it is likely that without timely outside intervention, accessing pipe borne water will continue to elude them for some unreasonable time.
