life goes on. from daily observor Sheriff Barry
Mr Kaliba Senghore, the Director-General of the Gambia Tourism Authority (GTA ), has said his organisation fully supports the upcoming Queen of African Beauty Contest to be held in Banjul on June 24. Mr Senghore made this remark last Thursday when Fatima Jabbie-Soley, the director and founder of Fabec's Promotions, together with Tida Camara the newly-crowned FACE of The Gambia, paid him a courtesy call at his office. He said the GTA has been keenly following the local selection process and commended the organisers for a job well done. He also expressed confidence that The Gambia will win the contest. According to him, the contest is important to the country because it will attract tourists and investors to the country. "It is for this reason that the GTA deems it fit to be part and parcel of it. I hope Gambians will fully participate in the event by coming out in numbers to give their support," he said.

My opinion about beauty contests has always been and will always be the same; that it´s ridicilous and women degrading nomatter which country they represent. It surprises me that there is anyone who still take beauty contests seriously. |

Well well, all women on the Bantaba agree with each other..
I suppose those who participate are not forced into these contests ? So what's the problem then. Besides for some of these girls this could be a start of a career in the world of media, fashion, etc
I like them LOOOL
Don't shoot me ladies, I'm just a man.  |

Sorry, Jede, I am just a woman... What kind of career do you mean - a career as a luxury prostitute? |

No Serenata, just like I said : media (presenter on television) and fashion-business.
There exists thousands of beauty contests all over the world and if you think that everyone of them jumps into the prostitution after the contest there would be more prostitutes and decent girls. ( a little exageration ), but you know what I mean.
Even without beauty contests there will be (luxury) prostitution. |

Jede, what about a men's beauty contest? The young men of the Wodaabe in Niger are courageous enough to do it!
All we have are these body building contests, whose participants could scare off little children with their ugly, monstrous bodies. |

LOL! Good one there Gambiabev! And when the guys get those silly questions about what they value the most in life, I´m sure the answer will be the same, usual crap: Worldpeace, save the planet and how much they love children and nature! Amen! |

Jambo - life is pretty absurd, folks are having a beauty contest while we read all kind of reports about killing, torture, arrests, terror in the Gambia. Kind of weird.
I'm not a Gambian woman, but wonder what the response is about this kind of thing..
If it walks like a duck, looks like a duck, maybe its a duck? BTW,the comments of Bev, Babylon and others are quite humourous.. Im still laughing about the question about the value of life asked to male contestants! |

hi there, i think this beauty contest struck me as being ridiculous, because of the situation in gambia. It was announced last week and should take place next week. GTS are sponsoring this. it is being arranged to bring visitors to gambia. The AU is being arranged to bring visitors to the gambia. Then i read about the farmers may/may not get paid. There is a general election in september and the opposition party are not ready. Fighting on the borders of gambia/casamance. The education budget is cut by 50%. For a small country there is a lot of action going on.

Jambo, Do you mean GTA and not GTS - I believe that GTS (Gambia Tourist Support) a non political - non religious charity need sponsors themselves to carry out their numerous Gambian projects;
More than 700 children across the country are sponsored & managed via GTS & GETSuk and many children receive medical care and some a feeding programme. They have built and provided three schools - a computer teaching room - a library –(need funds to allow it to open after school hours & during holidays) have set up a small museum at Brufut with music & culture centre - need funds to reconstruct round houses in the grounds to house local craft makers in wood, batik, herbalist, traditional tailoring plus demonstration of the tea making & African cooking all of which will prove further interest to visitors and create work & income for the local community. Youna Sports hall where inter-school tournaments are now held, needs funds to complete the final painting & fitting out. They are trying to find sponsors to provide further salary increases and employ more Gambian Teachers & in the process of establishing a skills workshop. As you can see they need funds & would not be sponsoring themselves. I am interested to know if you read it, or maybe you have mis-understood.
