I've just watched it. The people were really superficial and annoying, especially DAN!
But it was quite good at suggesting alternative ideas for holidays in Gambia and perhaps making people think a bit.
It is such a shame that people arent going out of the hotels to spend their cash. I feel very sorry for all the market stall holders.

Gambiabev,"The people were really superficial and annoying, especially DAN" quite frankly, all the Brits there were so superficial it was cringing,it appeared to me that THEY wanted to be the stars,Gambia was just a vehicle to let them do that,I wonder if they were "chosen" to let them all have exposure to the entertainment industry ?they must ALL have been acting, they cannot be for real,if they were I have never met such a bunch, and all that hugging Errrrrrr.
"But it was quite good at suggesting alternative ideas for holidays in Gambia and perhaps making people think a bit."
I hope it does. £300 per night at the Hotel ! when the apparent average wage is £200 a year for the locals !!! |

Yeh these people were really "superficial and annoying" but aren't they just the kind of people who would spend £300 a night for hotel accommodation. So no toubab unfortunately they weren't acting and they are for real. But are these the kind of tourist the Gambia needs? I think not. I notice they weren't asked and made no comment as to whether they would return. I don't think that the alternatives suggested were that good. All the accommodation mentioned is in fact quite expensive. |

"All the accommodation mentioned is in fact quite expensive." I probably would use different words ,yes agreed, "These people" have so much money, or maybe their family has, that they are not representitive of the normal "Brit" but writing that I think of drunken louts, old ladies (there maybe for more than a holiday) Old men come to it as well, girls, there for maybe the same reason as the old ladies and old men. THE AVERAGE BRIT IS FAR FROM PERFECT and quite often gives a bad impression when travelling abroad.
Still the Germans do put their towels on all the loungers by the pool at 3.30 in the morning I suppose |

Yes I agree when I see a lot english tourists abroard it make me cringe. A very valid point was made that many tourists stay in there hotels and a lot i think is down to the tour operators reps who put them of venturing out side the hotel complex |

Good points from all of you. Dan was an annoyance, but at least the programme gave Gambia some publicity which it desperaately needs. It's just a pity the people were cardboard *****s! |

It is normal for tour operator reps to give a "welcome to the Gambia" talk when tourists are collected by coach from the airport, this includes some "do and don't" information, like, the Gambia is a poor country, don't wear flash items watches jewellery etc,its not safe to leave the hotel unescorted, tours are available etc some of the tips are true others are not ,to be fair its not the reps fault they are employeed by the tour operators who want their customers to stay in the hotel and pay for the companies escorted tours at very expensive prices. As with everything its all about MONEY.

Same, old tired formula, pampered tourists taken from their luxury hotel, forced to live with people from another culture, then have the usual ephiphany,
Some of the statements were unbelievable, especailly as these people claim to be well travelled tourists. "I cant believe people live this way", "look, is that someone carrying food on their head", and worst of all from Dan "from now on I am going to respect people who clean our hotel rooms"...didn't you before Dan?
Dan, needs to seriously man up, what a wet fish(no pun intended) he turned out to be.
As already mentioned by another member, at least it gave Gambia some desperatly needed publicity. When I mention Gambia to anyone, the majority of people have never heard of the country.
I watched this programme hoping to learn more about Gambia, but came away dissapointed.
But then again I came to bantabaa to learn more about Gambia...and constantly come away dissapointed.
I think I will stick to the series "an ***** abroad"..would be brilliant if they could send Karl to Gambia though

Can't believe the word "1diot" has been censored, especially in light of the constant name calling that people get away with on this forum |

Lily we abused the word and most words that have stars have been abused on this forum, it's not just that particular word, hence the many mispelt words to avoid the stars. ............................Peacequote: Originally posted by Lily
