Elections have been brought forward to September 2006. Is this a calculated desire to win elections or is it a fair thing to do in the light of Ramadan when most people are fasting.
However, most farmers are busy in the fields during September and as such leaves very little room for campaigning. Some of the advantages for the APRC are.
1. It gives the opposition little room to organize 2. Because of the events of the AU Summit, Meet the Farmers Tour, July 22nd Celebrations all happening just before the elections, the minds of the electorate would have been captivated on the APRC. Any campaign by the opposition may not yield a major impact because of these national events, which the Government is controlling.
3. Because APRC anticipated this change, they would have already prepared themselves and take the opposition by surprise although Darboe said that they are fully prepared.
By the way is there a body of law, which IEC can use to call for early elections. I believe there should be a minimum period of notice. For example if elections are to be called earlier, such notices should go out at least six months in advance and not a short notice like this one especially when this is a General election.
Whant do you think?
