Henry Gomez calls on Darboe, Halifa and Hamat to ‘give chance’ ahead of November presidential polls

 Ahead of the forthcoming presidential elections scheduled for 24th November 2011, Henry Gomez, leader of the opposition Gambia Party for Democracy and Progress, has said that his party is ready to join an alliance with any other opposition party, but “only if there are new and emerging leaders.”
Gomez, who was speaking in an interview with this reporter yesterday, called on veteran opposition leaders like Ousainou Darboe of the UDP, Halifa Sallah of the PDOIS and Hamat Bah of the NRP to “give chance” to what he called a new breed of opposition leaders ahead of the November polls.
“Honestly speaking, leaders like Ousainou Darboe, Halifa Sallah and Hamat Bah should give chance to young and emerging opposition leaders, because they had their chance before,” Gomez said, adding that he has nothing against the trio.
According to Gomez, the GPDP is ready to go in for an alliance with any party, but there must be new leaders, noting that this is what Gambians are expecting in the run-up to the polls.
In his view, it is only new opposition leaders that can succeed in challenging the ruling APRC, come the November presidential polls.
Gomez further stated that the veteran opposition politicians pose no threat to the APRC because, as he put it, President Jammeh knows them very well.
“Neither Darboe nor Halifa or Hamat are threats to Jammeh. The only threat will be a new breed of opposition politicians,” he added.
Noting that his party will not allow itself to face a bitter experience, as it did during the 2006 elections, Gomez added that the GPDP is ready to contest the forthcoming election.
However, he stressed the need for attitudinal change, calling on all to put their selfish and personal interest aside.
“We can defeat the ruling APRC, but only if we have the right candidates,” he further stated, adding that the opposition in this country will never succeed unless and until it comes together as an alliance.
“The GPDP hopes to join an alliance only if we have the right candidates in place. Other than that, we will be doing it alone,” he stressed.
The GPDP leader went on to congratulate the Independent Electoral Commission for meeting what he said was their voter registration target, reiterating his earlier call for Gambians to be vigilant and not to give their national documents to foreigners.
Gomez dismissed as baseless, the notion that opposition party members are enemies to progress, noting that the fact is that both government and the opposition are looking towards the same direction of how to move and develop this country.
He stated that with a few years to the attainment of government’s Vision 2020 blueprint and others, the country is seeing a decline in certain social service sectors such as transportation and electricity, which, he went on, has diverse effects on the daily lives of Gambians.
“These sectors are seriously experiencing decline and, in as much as we are trying to build a city of lights, we continue to experience frequent power cuts in our homes, which is also affecting the water supply system,” he said, adding that the decline in transportation has registered a significant drop when it comes to the issue of punctuality at work.
“Communication is difficult, and this has not only negative effects on our livelihood, but is also a threat to our drive towards poverty alleviation,” he stated.

The leader of the opposition United Democratic Party, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, has reacted angrily to calls by Henry Gomez, leader of the opposition Gambia Party for Democracy and Development (GPDD) that he (Darboe), Halifa Sallah of PDOIS and Hamat Bah of the NRP should “give chance” to what he call a new breed of opposition leaders ahead of the November polls.
Gomez, who made the call in an interview with this reporter, also stated that his party is ready to join an alliance with any other opposition party, but “only if there are new and emerging leaders.”
Darboe also spoke in an interview with this reporter yesterday, and said he has high respect for Henry Gomez, while saluting Hamat Bah and Halifa Sallah for taking on the ruling APRC party over the years.
He stated that Halifa and Hamat were among those few people who had the courage, dedication and patriotism to challenge the APRC regime when it came into existence.
According to the UDP leader, the statement by Henry Gomez is his (Gomez’s) views, and that he (Darboe) will not engage in any “unedifying debate”.
“Those who believe that the leadership of the UDP needs new blood should come in and take up the leadership. I am prepared today to hand over the leadership of the UDP to anyone who is willing to lead, and also approved by the party membership,” Darboe declared.
He added that he will not demean anyone for not having the courage over the years to come out and talk, noting that this is a quality of leadership.
“As far as the UDP is concerned, probably the other parties have an agenda, but the UDP agenda is the APRC, which is the problem. We want to provide solutions to that problem, and we think we will provide a solution to that problem,” he said, while emphasizing his earlier point that he is ready to relinquish the leadership of the UDP to anyone, no matter his or her age.
While expressing optimism that there will be a political alliance ahead of the November presidential polls, the UDP leader said “the fact that you have different political parties with different political leaders does not mean that there will be no opposition alliances.
“After all, political parties have to be organized in order to add value to an alliance. If you are not organized, really you will not be identified by people for any alliance,” he stated, while also underscoring the need for political parties to organize themselves, and have their grassroots structures in place ahead of the polls.
“We are very optimistic that we will have an alliance of opposition parties before 24th November 2011,” he added.
Quizzed as to the current political situation in the country, Darboe described as “hostile,” the political climate, noting that even to use a slogan, one has to be careful of what type of slogan to use.
“In The Gambia, you have to be cautious of what type of slogan you will use, even though it is accepted in any political environment,” he further stated.
On the NADD experience, the UDP leader said: “If you are really talking about the need for an alliance or a united front for 2011, don’t talk about the past. Probably, the more we talk about it, it will make it difficult to realize the objectives for 2011.”

I HAVE A RIGHT TO OBSERVE AND COMMENT! BANTABA IS AN EXCHANGE FORUM AND HAVE SOMETHING ON DARBOE'S CONCLUSION AS REPORTED? NADD IS THE ISSUE FOR ANY OPPOSITION ALLIANCE WITH UDP THERE AND I HAVE RESERVATIONS AS REPORTED!

I now belief you are NADD sick. Well let me once again tell you shall never get cured because UDP wouild NEVER JOIN NADD so long as I live. Even if Ousainou decides to then he should go it alone.
Can't you sometimes be reasonable for once? You nedd us as well as we need you no single party can go it all out against a dicytator but if you guys think dragging your feet saying byforce we must wake the dead from the grave then so be it come november Gambians would speak and lets see what they think of your NADD and my UDP who defeats who at the polls.Only then your eyes would open but I think even then you would stick to your guns to keep Jammeh for good you think we don';t know?
NADD or no Gambia is bigger than NADD and UDP all put together even with APRC, why must you people stick on NADD or no coalitrion. |

Q1 You asked how opposition parties can come together under an Alliance fight against Jammeh through election?
Well the answer is simple so that they would unite in their common endevour which is simply to unseat the incumbent.
Oh do you now think otherwise after all what you have been writting all these while?
q2 You how opposition parties having come together under an ALLIANCE fight Jammeh through election?
Oh mighty seer I have not yet heard they have come together yet have they? when?
Q3 You asked in your last question how opposition can under any form of coalition fight against Yahya Jammeh through elections?
That is the simplest to answer and that is for all opposition supporters and disaffected Gambians who would have vote for a united opposition but refused to vote totally because of disunity would vote.
Now have I answered your three questions?
You now see how different we think about issues concerning our motherland? I would love to have any Gambian rule different from Yahya Jammeh. Of cause Ousainou is my first choice but taht doesnot mean I would not rejoice if Halifa defeats Jammeh and saves the Gambia.
Do you have the same for my leader? Don;'t lie say the truth! |

Gents, it's the circle syndrome again going round and round and never coming to the end travelling constantly and never finishing,totally fragmented, there is NO EFFECTIVE OPPOSITION,just those who want the job, spouting words, offering the ELECTORATE NO PROMISES OF CHANGES THEY WOULD SUPPORT AND TRY TO BRING ABOUT ,so why should the electorate vote ?
No wonder voter registration is slow !! Sorry. |

We have been there for the people since the onset unlike those who only visit the people during elections,"he said, adding that the APRC is always there for the people, whether elections or not.
Responding to comments made by veteran politician Hamat Bah of the NRP, that the APRC will have its greatest surprise come the 24th November polls, Colley said Hamat should first think about how to regain his lost seat in Upper Saloum.
“We all know that he can never get that seat again, much less of challenging President Jammeh,” he said, adding that for the APRC, Hamat is a minus.

Happy about Gomez’s statement, but…
The APRC national mobiliser further told this reporter that he was happy about the comments made by Henry Gomez, leader of the Gambia Party for Democracy and Progress that Ousainou Darboe, Hamat Bah and Halifa Sallah should give chance to new and emerging breed of young politicians, as they pose no threat to President Jammeh.
However, he noted that whether the opposition has a new or old breed of leaders, they will not win the elections.
“Gambians are not fools. How can you sit until the last minute and tell people to vote for you. They will only vote for those who have their concerns at heart, and this is no other than President Jammeh,” he concluded.
