FAO DG aspirant hails President Jammeh’s anti-hunger policy

An aspirant for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) top position has hailed the anti-hunger policy of the Gambian leader.

Miguel Angel Moratanos, the former Foreign Affairs minister of the Kingdom of Spain, now vying for the position of the director general of the UN food body arrived in the country Wednesday and later held discussions with His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, who is also the minister of Agriculture, at his Kanilai residence. Moratanos' visit was exclusively to solicit the Gambian leader’s support for him in his quest to become the next director general of the FAO.

Speaking to waiting reporters shortly after his closed-door meeting with the Gambian leader, the former Spanish Foreign Minister described President Jammeh as one of the African leaders who sometime ago caught the vision that to return to agriculture was key to the prosperity and wealth of Africa. He commended President Jammeh for not only recognising this fact, but also implementing it.

Moratanos underscored that the Gambian leader has the vision that agriculture was a key sector for the future of not only Africa, but the international community at large. “Now everybody look to his model because when he decided to go back to agriculture; other people prefer to go to other sectors. But after the 2008/09 food crisis, now everybody is trying to go back to agriculture. Now they have seen how things have progressed in The Gambia,” he stated.

He further stated that food and agriculture are going to be strategic issues in this 21st Century, while pointing out that the salvation of the international community lies on that. Commenting on his meeting with President Jammeh, he said: “I received good advice, orientation, vision and we had a very fruitful discussion.” Quizzed on the importance of the support of the Gambian leader towards his candidacy, Moratanos replied: “I think he is very much in favour of it.”

Banjul-Madrid ties
Commenting on Banjul_Madrid ties, the former Spanish Foreign Affairs minister extolled the relationship between the two countries, saying it has been growing over the last few years. He then stressed that the time has come for both countries to enhance the relationship and ensure High-level visits by the two leaders.

He concluded by suggesting that the two countries could reinforce the ties not only at the political level, but in the areas of socio-economic development, tourism and culture, amongst others.
