FOLLOWING BANTABA OPINION POLLS ON "Do you think a coalition led by UDP's Ousainou Darboe as proposed in Dr. Saine's recent paper is the way forward for the Gambia?"; REVIEW AND COMMENTS ON DR.SAINE'S PAPER

NOTE:
1. DR SAINE CONCERNS AND COMMENTS HIGHLIGHTED BLUE.
2. FOLLOWED BY MY OPINIONS IN RED.
3. HOPEFULLY OTHERS MAY BE INTERESTED TO EXCHANGE VIEWS AND EXPECTING A TENSE DEBATE

ACCORDING TO DR.SAINE "It is laughable to expect Gambians in their thousands to return home to cast a ballot in their “constituencies of origin.”

What an utter waste of valuable resources that could, otherwise, be spent to benefit Gambians at home. Why make it so difficult for Diaspora Gambians to exercise such a fundamental right?

The answer is simple—they need our monthly remittances, not our vote, out of fear that Jammeh would be flushed out; even though he now enjoys considerable support among pockets of Gambians abroad.

1. First part covers partly an election petition against IEC and Gambia government mixed with civic education for education for Gambian citizens; especially those living abroad and dis-enfranchised by IEC and Goverment of The Gambia

2. On 1. above Dr. Saine's petition is pointless "blame game" for a "scapegoat" in on-line media and Gambia Daily, if relevant authorities (i.e. IEC and Gambia government) are not taken to task through a petition letter; like what Movement For Demoracy achieved and best described or articulated from these statements;

i. Lawyer Ousainou Darboe UDP leader declared;

"We ask all our citizens to be an integral part of the change they seek by getting involved in whatever capacity suits them.Change is always a difficult task and along the way it is easy to become despondent, fearful, tired, angry, and sometimes be tempted to throw in the towel. But because the cause we have embarked upon is a just one that must be pursued, we must all strive harder to achieve these important goals. We however, can do it only if we come together as one and face the opponent.This cause is bigger than any individual or group of individuals."

ii.For Halifa Sallah; simply as "Call for (NATIONAL) duty" on "Gambia matters"; & "every citizen" challenged by PDOIS to take destiny of the country in "own hands"

3. For 1. & 2 above; With courtesy of GAINAKO ON-LINE NEWS these links below i. & ii. are related with all issues, points and concerns raised by Dr. Saine; for first part of his paper mainly on "What democracy denies its people the right to vote"

i. Movement for Democracy Call on IEC to Involve Diaspora Gambians in the Upcoming Elections UNDER http://www.gainako.com/news/news/2011/05/10/movement-for-democracy-call-on-iec-to-involve-diaspora-gambians-in-the-upcoming-elections.html

ii. IEC REPLY FOR 3i. FROM GAINAKO NEWS WITH IEC Chairman Carayol Response to Movement for Democracy Query about Diapora Disenfranchisement UNDER http://www.gainako.com/news/news/2011/05/13/iec-chairman-carayol-response-to-movement-for-democracy-query-about-diapora-disenfranchisement.html

iii. Maafanta.com with Gambian Movement for Democracy and Development Letter to Alhaji Mustapha Carayol requesting an estimator cost under http://www.maafanta.com/SaihouMballowLetterToCarayolEstimatorCost.html

What democracy denies its people the right to vote?

4. WITH DUE RESPECT FOR Dr. Saine, who is a re-known Gambian dissident intellectual could have done better than what "Movement for Democracy" spearheaded; to address concerns of citizens' abroad "right to vote"; OR to contact appropriate authorities and achieve desired results

5. Therefore the first part of Dr. Saine's paper has no plausible weight to support what follows in second part of paper; especially any positive approval of opinion polls "as way forward for the Gambia" (opposition)

Only despots that hide behind a façade of democracy will go to these lengths.

The IEC and Jammeh are not entirely at fault. The Opposition political party aficionados are just as complicit. Their parties remain disorganized, splintered and bututless; and for the most part are themselves paralyzed by fear- never attempting to challenge the constitutionality of this illegal state of affairs. Rather than compromise, which is the art of politics, they are consumed by distrust, as they wallow in trite recrimination against one another- all hoping against all odds that they too shall become president someday. This is at best delusional grandstanding even though all it takes to win is to form a united front against Jammeh. This is not rocket science but a simple strategy. Get the rascals out and then duke it out amongst yourselves.

1. It is evident from above that Dr. Saine tends to blame, charge and indict EVERYONE IN OPPOSITION CAMP; i.e WITHOUT EXCEPTION "ALL" OPPONENTS especially party "aficionados" or militants, leadership, vocal elites, on-line forum members debating, interacting and participating in national/citizen issues; amongst other enthusiast in Gambian politics

2. No opposition party or opposition party leader gained any credibility as comments addressed hostile conditions of opposition parties and exposed main weaknesses of opponents of Jammeh/APRC

3. These related statements from Dr. Saine are very interesting; as we follow his line of thoughts that supports rational on certain prescriptions below and/or referring to Bantaba opinion poll stated above;

i. "All it takes to win is to form a UNITED FRONT against Jammeh"
ii. "This is not a rocket science but a simple strategy"
iii. "Get the rascals out and then duke it out amongst yourselves."

4. For 3i. & ii. I AGREE THAT TO FORM "A UNITED FRONT" IS THE BEST STRATEGY FOR OPPOSITION TO MOBILISED AGAINST JAMMEH/APRC! However I wonder whether Dr.Saine thought deeply on forming "a UNITED FRONT"; for its a simple strategy if there is a proper framework for common ground, meeting of minds, spirit of unity, teamwork, partnership and solidarity, amongst others; to UNITE UNDER ONE UMBRELLA? However very complex to accomplish an agreement and synchronised the policies between them; under a multi-party system and ideal norms of democracy

5. Quoting Dr. Saine under 3iii.; I wonder who are referred as genuine and sincere or insincere and unscrupulous persons for "Rascals"; or ones who should "duke it out among themselves"

6. Under point 5. above, PDOIS may be helpful with these statements quoted under 6i.& 6ii. below from them amongst others;

i. "Today no Gambian leader could be considered genuine unless he or she accepts in both word and deed, that power belongs to the people and that he or she is their mere servant."

ii. "Hence any national who wants to lead without deriving legitimacy from the consent of the Gambian people, through periodic free and fair elections is not fit to lead a Republic in the twenty first century. In the same vein, any one who harbours personal ill-will or hatred for any other national is not fit to preside over the fate of a Republic. A genuine leader of the Republic must have a heart and mind which speak the language of truth and justice. Such a leader must be ready to perpetrate injustice to none and do justice to all without fear or favour, affection or ill-will."

7. [red]So far from preceding generic statements covered in Dr. Saine's paper above; it is cynical and preposterous to suggest or assume that Dr. Saine is endorsing credibility of an opposition party or opposition party leader; or connected with the proposed perception under Bantaba opinion poll that "a coalition led by UDP's Ousainou Darboe is the way forward for the Gambia?"

Thus, the 2011 presidential election results are a foregone conclusion! You do not have to be a political scientist or bantaba pundit to figure this one out. It seems all Gambians know this except the party leaders that plan to run and be humiliated. Jammeh and his APRC party will trounce any and all who dare stand his way. He has the money, arms and threatens to use them, which he will, if cornered.

Did he not arrest and imprison Femi with impunity, without a whimper? Does Jammeh not use state media, while denying Opposition political heads their right to do so? Does he not have the IEC in his pocket and hires and fire at will its members? Does the Constitution not favor him and his kind? Need I go on?

How can Gambians at home and those in the Diaspora salvage the 2011 presidential election? If you cannot vote; vote with your wallet, and threaten to withhold the monthly “fish-money.” Demand that relatives vote and vote for the candidate that stands the best chance of winning.

That happens to be Ousainou Darboe. Demand that all Opposition parties and aficionados rally behind Darboe, this once and see what happens. Darboe must now take a bold move, take the bull by its horns and make deals with the other party leaders- promise them the moon and get them on his side. Once in office, establish a union government to run the country for a one five-year term, while putting the necessary instruments and environment in place for a free and fair presidential poll.

This may well be the antidote to the political impasse that currently grips the country. With this strategy, Jammeh can have all the money, media, IEC and arms on his side and still be flushed out of office. Will the PPP, NRP, PDOIS leadership rally behind Darboe or would they rather see Jammeh be handed a fourth five-year term? This is question and the choice is clear to all."

WOW Kobo,you have been busy analizing the situation in one posting (I like your extensive use of the word simple )you have summed up everything in one complete posting.

"Simple is good" & I strongly dislike politics. You cannot defend the indefensible.

bro kobo,
yes you are entitled to your opinion so much as Dr. Saine and every other Gambian. You would agree with all of us the thses kinds of open based opinions are not even acceptable or condoned by the dictatorial regime we all waiste time here on this important forum pondering about.
However I still don;t see your point.Can you kindly tell us what do you think in your opinion is the only way forward to flush this disease from us all?
I believe if some think Dr. Saine's candid opinion is misleading then what is not? For you and I are here possibly relaxing but vast majority of our people still suffer under the yoke of brutality.
Your opinion on way forward please!
No lectures for I really want Yahya Jammeh out of office and If you so do, come to the point don;t write nonsense for we are all adults and no kids.
What can we do to get our goal.

Maybe, but in a lot of ways it does give some sort of balance to the discussion,which is a good thing.

1. ON DR. SAINES'S PAPER; PART 1 COVERED "What democracy denies people right of vote?"

I HOPE THAT MY POINTS ON FIRST PART OF DR.SAINE PAPER ARE VALID; ESPECIALLY THIS CONCLUSION UNDER 7

7. So far from preceding generic statements covered in Dr.

2. NOW AM MOVING ON SECOND PART OF PAPER BELOW FOR REVIEW, COMMENTS & OPINIONS; TO SORT OUT THE PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS "ON WAY FORWARD FOR OPPOSITION"
