GARDENERS CALL FOR MARKET AND AFFORDABLE GARDEN INPUTS
By Publisher on 14-05-11
Gardeners in Chamen Bunder in the Wuli West District, Upper River Region of the Gambia asserted that for women empowerment to be a reality in the Gambia , it must extend to the women who are engaged in horticultural gardening by providing them with marketing outlet for their produce and affordable inputs and materials.
The Gardeners made these assertions during a visit of the District on the 25th of April 2011 as part of his assignment to monitor and report on issue affecting the life of the people in the rural area.
The Gardener who spoke to this reporter in Wuli West, Upper River Region of the Gambia, lamented the difficulties they encounter in getting fencing materials and marketing their horticultural produce.
The gardeners asserted that the women are hard working, but opportunities are not given to them. They outlined their main constraints as women, citing the drudgery they go through in their daily work at home,, at the farms and in their gardens.
They lamented that they go to Sare Gare lumo(Weekly Market) in order to find customers for their produce. They argue that this also goes with cost and due to the high cost of transportation and lack of storage facilities; they end up selling their produce at give away prices instead of allowing them to perish by the end of the day.
Other than the lack of marketing outlet which is their major problem as gardeners ,they said, their other constraints are the high cost of garden inputs and fencing materials.
The women asserted that they encounter problems in their garden due to the invasion of insects and the lack of pesticides due to the high cost.
They shed light on the lack of proper fence due to the high cost of fencing materials. This, they say, makes their gardens vulnerable to animal intrusion.
They concluded by calling on Government and Non-governmental Organizations to come to their aid in a bid to ensure their economic empowerment.
Similar views were expressed by the gardeners who spoke to this reporter in both Wuli West and Wuli East in the Upper River Region of the Gambia.

"Simple is good" & I strongly dislike politics. You cannot defend the indefensible.
