DAILY OBSERVER WITH PRESIDENT JAMMEH Gambia’s anti-hunger crusade boosted As President Jammeh gives out dozens of tractors UNDER http://observer.gm/africa/gambia/article/gambias-anti-hunger-crusade-boosted-as-president-jammeh-gives-out-dozens-of-tractors

"Reaction of the elated chiefs

The delightful looking chiefs who took the podium were full of praises for what the Gambian leader has done, something they said they have been yearning for long. The paramount chief of The Gambia, Alhaji Demba Sanyang extolled President Jammeh for the move, saying the gesture speaks volumes of the importance he attached to agriculture, food self-sufficiency in particular. The paramount chief then assured President Jammeh of the chiefs’ unceasing support and loyalty to him in the crusade of national development.

The chief of Upper Niumi, Lamin Queen Jammeh, who doubles as the secretary general of the National Council of Seyfolou, equally praised President Jammeh for the move, which he described as exemplary and outstanding. The Upper Niumi chief underscored that national development cannot be achieved without developing agriculture, while stressing that agriculture itself cannot be developed without mechanization, thus praising the Gambian leader for this foresight. While noting that all have been witnesses to the massive developments from July 1994 to date, Queen Jammeh also craved the indulgence of the people to reciprocate the many gestures of the president.

Bakary Badgie, Hammed Minteh Krubally, Jim Fatima Jobe, Alassan Davis Cham, chiefs of Foni Bondaili, Fulladu East, Jokadu and Nianija all joined previous speakers to commend President Jammeh for the move. They all assured that the tractors will be put into good use."

Yes kobo,
They would be put into good use by ploughing on only farms of APRC supporters. What chiefs should be asking themselves is are these tractors from the president's own pocket or from donors which is given to the Gambian people as a whole through its president?

2. UPDATE WITH DAILY OBSERVER More tractors donated to intensify food self-sufficiency campaign UNDER http://observer.gm/africa/gambia/article/more-tractors-donated-to-intensify-food-self-sufficiency-campaign

MAIN EXTRACTS:

"His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, who doubles as the minister of Agriculture handed over the tractors to the beneficiaries Tuesday afternoon at State House grounds in Banjul.

The North Bank Region (NBR) received 22 tractors for use by deserving farmers in that region; Central River and Upper River Regions (CRR and URR) each received 21 tractors; West Coast Region (WRC) received 22 tractors; whilst the Lower River Region received seven tractors. Meanwhile, each of the regional governors and the two mayors got a tractor, which was declared “their own”, different from those donated to their respective regions.

In the same vein members of the Gambia armed and security services were also given tractors. The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) received 14 tractors, the Gambia Police Force (GPF) got four, while five went to the Gambia Prisons Services.

Other beneficiaries were the Gambia Dock Workers (four tractors) the Gambia Radio and Television Services (one tractor) three villages in the West Coast Region and the North Bank Region respectively; as well as the National Assembly member for Foni Jarrol, Honourable Borry Colley.

Tuesday’s presentation came hard on the heels of a similar donation on Monday by the president, of 47 brand new tractors to all the 40 chiefs in the country, as well as the Ministry of Youths and Sports, bringing the total number of tractors given out within 24 hours to 178. The donation came at a time when farmers across the length and breath of the country are bracing up for this year’s planting season with the ambition of registering a bumper harvest at the end of the season, for not only domestic consumption but also for commercial purposes. "

Reactions of the governors

"The regional governors were full of praises and appreciation for this latest move by the Gambian leader. Omar Khan, Edwarr Seckan, and Alhaji Ganyie Touray, governors of the Upper River, North Bank, and Central River Regions respectively, all heaped praises on the president for not only donating the tractors, but for his numerous national development initiatives that have impacted on the lives of the citizens. The governors then pledged to reciprocate the Gambian leader’s gesture, especially in the forthcoming election by making sure that he garners more than 90 per cent of the votes.

Honourable Saikouna Sanneh, nominated National Assembly member made similar remarks, and used the opportunity to enjoin the youths of the country to be more active in agricultural production in the country so as to attain food self-sufficiency. Several other speakers at the occasion equally expressed similar sentiments. The occasion was moderated by Ms Fatou Camara, director of Press and Public Relations, Office of the President."
