7. FOROYAA ONLINE Editorial : REGISTRATION OF VOTERS ENDS TODAY HAVE YOU REGISTERED AND WHAT NEXT?

"The Registration of voters started on the 5th May 2011 and is to end today 17th June 2011. The people who are qualified to register as voters are those who are Gambian citizens and have attained or would attain 18 years by 24 November 2011. The person has a right to be registered in the constituency where he/she resides or is born. The other factors which bar a person from being registered as a voter in The Gambia is affliction with infirmity of mind, being imprisoned and being in possession of a voter’s card of another country. In our view the imprisonment of a person does not make the prisoner an alien in one’s country. Hence prisoners should have the right to vote."Foroyaa

Am I wrong ?

The estimated population in the Gambia is about 1,650,000 . (1,361,000 in 2003)
50 % of the population is younger than 18. Which means that 825,000 people are allowed to vote.
The registration of the voters reached the number of 869,000.

Where am i wrong?

Hi Jack,
Here are some answers sent to me.
"The present estimate for the population stands at 1.800,000 and 50% of this population is said to be under 25. The total number registered according to IEC this year stands at 837,029 voters."

Jerejeff Momodou,

anyway a registration rate of 93 % is remarkable, very remarkable, extremely remarkable.

But wonders are not exceptional in the Gambia
