1) NIGERIA
A Country almost the third most populous nation in the world comprises of three blocs ie, the East,North and South.Nigeria known outside as a developing nation but how true is that when despite some $280billion in export revenue since the discovery of oil in the late 1950s,three quater of the entire population live in poverty without access to clean water,leteracy below the Democratic Republic of Congo,the foreign dept stands at $48 billion.It is rank as the eight poorest in the world by the world bank.
well the following are responsible,
Nigeria was designated in 1914 to serve the British Empire and even after independance,it serves as a tool of plunder by the country's modern rulers back by her former master and the west including the US.
When the British left, (1)A Northerner,Alh.Sir Abubakr T.Balewa became its first federal priminister(Housa) with Dr.Namdi Azikwe(Ibo) as President,and chief Obafemi Owolowo as chief minister(Yoroba).
In 1964,the PM A.T.Balewa sent the military against the Tiv people a minority clan struggling for regional autonomy.That was the first use of the taste of the Nigerian military brutality against civilians.Discontent amongst some Ibos and Yorobas as to the northern domination of the country let to riots and things came to chaos when on the morning of January 15th,1966,a group of mainly Ibo army officers led by a popular Sandhurst-trained major Chukwuma Nzeogwu attempted to overthrow the government of Tafawa Balewa which resulted in the execution of the prime-minister Balewa and the Sarduana of sokoto Ahmadu Bello and his wife all Northerners. Also prominent Northern military officers such as Brigadier Zakariya Maimalari, Colonel Kur Mohammed,Lieutenant colonel Abogo Largema, and colonel Yakubu Pam were killed.This has outraged the Northerners so much that there was fears of civil war breaking out.Young officers in Africa then thought they were better suited than the politicians to run the affairs of the country because people will fear them as they have guns.The coup failed but in the end with the Prime-minister dead together with the premiers of both the Nothern and Western regions,the rump of the federal governance fell to the Highest ranking Army officer General John Ironsi also an Ibo.
Then in july nothern military soldiers launched "Operation Araba".It was a bloody affair.The idea was to secede the North from the whole federation,but that Idea was latter wiped out by Britain and U.S.Led by Major Murtala Muhammad and Captain Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma,killed mostly Ibo officers and let Lieutinant Colonel Yakubu Gowon (A northerner)to take over the reigns of the Governing Supreme Military council.Chaos broke out from september,Northerners murdered more than tens of thousands of Easterners mainly Ibos and the military governor of the then Eastern region,Colonel Ojukwu refused to accept thirty year old Gowon an inferior in rank to him as his commander in chief.In may 1967,he declared the independant republic of Biafra.On the 6th july war broke out between the federal forces and the Biafran secessionists.Many thousands lost their lives,and Colonel Ojukwu who has the western and Ivorians backing thought he could break the oil rick region from the federation.The war came to an end in January 1970 when Colonel Obasanjo's marine division captured the Biafran Radio station and Ojukwu fled to Ivory coast.Gowon was unable to tame his twelve military governors who became so corrupt certain discontented colonels mainly muslims and christians decided it was time to get rid of him.Joseph Garba, Musa Yar'Adua,Obasanjo,Murtala Muhammed,I.B.Babangida,and Major Danjuma, overthrew Gowon and choose Major General Murtala Muhammed as the new Chief.
Still refered as Nigeria's best,Muhammed did a lot of reforms with the boom of oil but did not live long to continue the good work only six months in office,he was brutally assasinated by Colonel Dimka,(whose elder brother was married to Gowon's sister),with Major General I.D.Bissalla all Easterners.The coup again failed and Obasanjo was asked to lead the state with Yar' Adua as his duputy.The Obasanjo admimistration executedmore thirty coup ploters includding Dimka and Bissalla.He was then Chief Of Army staff in Murtala Muhammed's administration.He also did a lot of infracstructural developments and threeyears latter,handed over power to a CIVILIAN ELECTED government. (2)Alhagie Saikou Shagari,a Northerner won the election against Owololo and Nnamdi Azikiwe (The first President at independance)

After Shagari assumed the head office,public disenchantment set in quickly.Waves of religiou riots plague for years to come.Aradical muslim sect led by Muhammed Marwa(Maitatsine) mobilized the young urban poor into series of bloody uprisings in Kano,Kaduna Maiduguri and Yala killing several thousand christians.The military again were considering ousting Shagari as early as 1981.There was wide spread corruption,Masoud Abiola and others got quick riches.His News paper The Concord was used to attark opponents of the government.In december 31st 1983, Babangida, Major General Tunde Idiagbon with Major General Buhari with some officers like Sanni Abacha took over power and led Buhari to become the new chief.Buhari also did nothing new only to enrich themselves.Three years latter His friend on august 27 1985,Babangida,Abacha,Abdousalami Abubakr,and other officers remove Buhari through a palace coup and I.B.Babangida took the mantle (Merry go round).He promised good governance and a transition to civilian rule.Helped by his friend Abiola's Concord news paper,he became known as the Maradona of Nigeria.The gave him all he wanted to cling onto power.In 1988, Margaret Thatcher,the then Brirish priminister urged Babandida to exchange his military uniforms for civilian clothes and run for president promising international support.In April 1990 a group of young officers mainly from the Delta state led by Major Gideon Orkar took over the radio station announcing the down fall of Babangida regime.The coup failed when General Abacha(A friend to Babangida from the same town of Mina) foiled the coup.Thousands were arrested including a human right activist Dr. Beko Ransome-kuti(Brother to Fela Ransome-kuti)
When the time came for a general election,Abiola sought the support of his friend I.B.B.After going for the presidency with Bashir Tofa(ex Military) and Abiola came victorious winning 19 states to 11 states of Tofa but b4 the final count, Babangida annulled the elections.There was chaos every where.But seing thing going for the worst,Babangida decided it was time to hand over to a robber stamped leader who will bow to the military wishes thus he gave power to Chief Shonekan and also retiring the entire high military command removing the name of Sanni Abacha from the list.During his term, 12 billion dollars went missing from the state coffers.Abacha become Shonekan's defence minister.In November 1993, Abacha with Major General Abdousallami Abubakr and some remnants of the less rich senior officers removed Shonekan from office without problems.Abacha came for revenge against his opponents both in the military and civilian camps.Abacha killed as many as he can and imprison many includding Abiola,Musa Yar'Adua(both died in jail) and executed Ken sara Wiwa with some forty Ogoni activists despite international outcry to preserve their lives.But during even those days the west and America took less notice as even when Obasango, Yar'Adua Ken and other languished in Jail,while the rest of the world talk openly against the dictatorialregime of Sanni Abacha,his adviser had so many dinners with US president Bill Clinton. He sent millions of dollars accross the world Includding the Gambia one of his finance hideouts(We shall talk about Jammeh's hidden wealth and how he came to power whan we discuss the Gambia) Latter Abacha died of misterious cercumstances.Some even believing that Babangida had a hand in his death(Not forgiving his hometown friend for killing Abiola).People like Obasango who were then kept in jail were released by Abdousallami Abubakr who took over after his master's suddent death.
Then the next election came Obasango standing this time as a civilian and winning the election.His trainned officer Abdousalami Abubakr gave him the mantle to lead the nation.But would he deliver this time after stealing billions during his military days? |
