ALHAGIE NYABALLY RELEASED

By Bakary Jobarteh and Kemo Mankajang

A reliable source has informed this paper that the former president of The Gambia Students’ Union (GAMSU), Mr. Alhagie Nyabally, is released from detention. The source intimated that Mr. Nyabally was arrested on 17th April 2006 and released barely 41 days later.

When this paper contacted Mr. Nyabally, he confirmed the story that he was released. He praised Allah and all well wishers especially his wife, Kaddy Samateh-Nyabally, and family members, but declined to make any further comments. When this paper contacted Mrs. Kaddy Samateh-Nyabally, she confirmed the story by saying “yes at last my husband is released. I am very, very happy today.”

It could be recalled that Alhagie Nyabally, during an after his student leadership, has had a bitter encounter with the government of The Gambia following the April 10th and 11th unfortunate students’ demonstration in the country.

congrats Nyabs., and may the peace of the Mighty lord be with you always.

We will remember you always for your steadfastness, courage, and being vocal against oppressors. Though, young you are, you demonstrated to be a hero out of millions-cos you got the gut to live in a country you know is not safe for you. The gone mates of yours in April, 2000 -knows a man is left behind who continues to represent them and to fight to see justice done on their behalf.I understand you are not alone in it, but you are truly my hero.

Welcome back to freedom-

Long live freedom !!
Down with Slavery and oppression !!

Uncle Biraago, by the way, thanks for the encouragement always and for watching out for us.

I tell you, freedom is so delicious. How i wish i was there to cheer him for his regain of freedom after 40-something days in those jails. Nyabally is typical of an activist. When Omar Joof, his Gamsu predecessor was exiled-he took over the Gamsu presidency, a position he held till the tyrannical administration undermined the movement by forming Napsa. Since April 2000, he is subjected arrest and detention yearly. Speeches he made during comemoration of the student riot were excellent. He made a firm promise and pledge to the victims and their families that justice will one day materialise. Such could only come from a man with courage and concern about his mates. Of course, his entire student body were with him. What made me surprised this year was that he didn't organise any rally or make any public statement. The only piece i remember was from Omar Joof, currently in canada.

In the past, from Nyabally's own mouth that some number-plateless cars were pursuing him day-in and day-out.

Stay blessed and safe Nyabally !

My support and prayers goes to Alagie Nyabally, its difficult to comprehend his situation on the practical size any of us folks can fall victim of Jammeh's brutality and be in similar circumstances. Knowing my family and thir reaction when am fallen ill, I cannot begin to think what Nyabally's family is or has gone through these period.

I hope he and his family will fine comfort in the bright future in the horizon because justice is not a dream or gift as some will like us to think but reality for all to enjoy.

Somita,

Thanks for your prayers. I felt the same way for this guy. I know at a time he had a visa to leave the country. But sometimes leaving is not a solution to the problems. It is the wish of the Government that anyone who is a headache to them to leave.

Also, i must say his wife, Kaddy Samateh-Nybally is a strong women. She won't hesitate or shy to make headlines at the foroyya or point whenever they come for her husband. Such parting moments can be really sad, when you say bye to a loved one in that manner-you don't know how many scars he will come back with or if at all he will be back to the house alive.

Stay blessed on this friday !

Dalton,

I give my whole heart to genuine people whereever they are. Particularly when they are consistent.

Could you please give a brief outlook of the difficulties he has been facing from within GAMSU before and after the re-organisation of the Union?

I don't think many are acquainted with the struggle GAMSU has been going through.

You could remark it with the silence from most activists.

They also need lots of support inorder to succeed in their noble input in he collective struggle.

You probably right, we will try to summarise some of the key events as we withnessed it then.

The Gamsu activism deserve a kudos. It wasn't merely sturborness but fighting for the rights of students denied access to their rights.

-On march 9th 2000, Ebrima Barry, a student at forsters jnr school was beaten and tortured to death by six fire officials at the Brikama fire service.
-at the interhouse competition at the Bakau stadium, 13-year old sport girl-Bintou was raped by one of the paramilitary officials.
-at the beach side, piu officials constantly attacked students especially those from muslim high and saint Augustines-tortures, beatings
-in the school buses, usually packed with students like logs of firewood, were constantly stopped at the police stop stations, especially at Denton bridge. Some students were seriously beaten without any just cause.
-it is noted that when ever a clash occured between students and the piu, other soldiers were deployed to use weapon justice on innocent students.
-in all the sports competitions at the independent stadium, the piu always maltreated students.
-It was a matter of growing torture, stripped freedom.
-Active students gathered to extend frontiers of the student union that dated from the time of Baba Galleh and his mates then-to widen the student movement, and to give it a new name. Gamsu was born.
-The raping of Bintou and death of Ebrima Barry escalated the situation, under the leadership of Omar Joof. Prior to the death of Ebrima and rape of Bintou, Gamsu was very active. Infact students were answerable wholeheartly to Gamsu, a movement they believd was out to rescue them. Gamsu was growing rapidly, with representaives from all senior schools in the country. It was getting saturated for any to accept the tortures on fellow students. After the death of Barry and rape of Bintou, Gamsu approached both the DOSE and IG to hold a peaceful rally. Actually, FRI Jammeh was one victim of this event to loose his job.

To be continued !!

Good start,

Don't forget to take up the events of two years ago when there was an infiltration and virtual paralysis of the executive an dthe meeting of Jammeh and the statements that followed suit.

Great job.

We need to be putting the people in the picture and keep on reminding them. Only in this way could he people take an informed stance.

Take care

Thank you Dalton – Again your posting came from the heart.
Remember Mandela’s words after his release, ‘It was the press who never forgot us’ technology has changed allowing a conscientious voice like yourself a role in ‘cyberspace.’

Alagie Nyabally and others silenced in their homeland will one day be completely free to thank you and others for keeping atrocious acts vocal. We know that Alagie is with his family, but a free man he is not!

Bantaba always the educator – this posting prompted me to refresh the memory on the forming of NAPSA?

Congratulations to Alhagie, as brother Danton said, welcome to freedom. I was equally jubilant when I heart the news. My encouragement to you is to belief in yourself and what you stand for. Regardless of the pressure on you and the insecurity to your family, the Lord Almighty is watching them every single minute.

Never ever give up brother Nyab. Those who give up so quickly often fails. Your persistence will one day be rewarded. I have been personally in touch with Nyabally and I, like many others are with you both in spirit and in the struggle.

I will admit I never met Nyabally, but through a close friend I came to know him and admire his courage. We need many kinds of Nyabally and am sure many more are standing up to the oppressors. They must not and cannot go unchallenged. As I said before, we may not all get there together, but we will certainly get there one day.

To brother Nyabally, stand tall and keep up the struggle. I want to asure you that help is on the way for you and your family. By the grace of Allah you will not regret standing up for your brothers and sisters. Though young as you are, you are a symbol of resistance and courage to a silence majority. Keep up brother and be safe.
Peace

Life is about principle and belief. Every human must resist slavery, oppression and being used as a tool-either to oppress, lie, praise-sing, mask, hypocrisy etc.The voices of desent must never be murdered. Reliance and hope on the powers of the lord is the best; and it is the best grip. The state of being human is really sympathetic. When daylight comes, bats are of course noctural, but we see the walk-way path.

Kooto Dalton, (Brother)

Yaa Allah Yumma mawdo. (May the lord reward you for your work)

Thanks for the compliments. Life is only worth living if it has a purpose. Without a purpose there is no need to live. Cowards die twice and the brave will always live to be remembered. Nyabally has certainly demonstrated bravely and courage.
We shall overcome and should be louder today than ever.
Peace.
