The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) acting in accordance with Section 43 of the 1997 Constitution and 1996 Elections Decree No 78 will today unveil the 2011 Election Calendar.
The development would take place at the IEC complex dubbed ‘Election House’ along the Bertil Harding Highway at 11:00am. The occasion would take the form of a press conference and is expected to be witnessed by all stakeholders ranging from political parties, to civil society organisations, the media fraternity, security services and all other relevant institutions.
In a related but separate engagement, officials of the IEC in collaboration with stakeholders including, political parties, media, civil society, security services among others, Tuesday validated a voter education guideline at the commission’s headquarters. The move is part of IEC’s commitment to live up to the demands of its motto: integrity, fair play and transparency and to ensure that elections in the country become the business of all. The 53-page document is expected to be the guiding bible for voter education in the country ahead of general registrations for the conduct of the much-awaited presidential poll.
The daylong forum saw stakeholders critically brainstorm over the document page by page, propose recommendations as well as challenge some clauses stated therein, all with the single motive of ensuring that a standard voter education manual is developed to be used by the IEC and its’ agents in educating the populace to become conscious of their voting rights so that the problem of voter apathy faced by the country’s electoral process is minimised.
Isatou Jallow-Ndure, an IEC Commission member, described the validation forum as both timely and fundamental. While observing that previous elections were smoothly conducted, she said one lesson that every stakeholder in the electoral process lamented was the low voter turnout, and as such the IEC took it incumbent upon itself to produce a voter education guideline so as to ensure that the issue of voter apathy is addressed. She also spoke at length on the significance of elections and called on participants at the forum to put their best into the document to make elections the business of all."
