Dozens of Canteens Closed At Serrekunda Market
By Fabakary B. Ceesay on 11-03-11

Reliable information gathered by Foroyaa from Serrekunda Market canteen owners has it that market officials from Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), have since Friday 25 February shut down dozens of canteens at the market without giving them prior notice. The canteens owners said the market officials accompanied by municipal police went round the market and closed canteens whose owners are yet to offset their arrears to the Council.
According to the canteens’ owners, the market officials from KMC came to them on Friday afternoon and asked them to pay all their arrears to the Council. They lamented not being given any ultimatum or time for them to settle their arrears before their canteens would be shut down. They argued that the reasons for the failure of many to pay their rent fees was due to the heavy expenditure they incurred in building their canteens to standard. Some told Foroyaa that they spent between D10, 000 to D15, 000 to build canteens made of iron plates as stipulated by KMC.
Many of the canteen owners said at first they thought KMC would be reasonable and allow them to recover their heavy expenses. They said they started operating their canteens six months ago. They said they are paying D250 for a small canteen and D500 for a big canteen. Some said even though they have paid up to three and four months, their canteens were shut down by the market officials. Many attributed their failure to pay their rental fees to economic problems and the skyrocketing of prices.
This reporter went to the market on Tuesday 1 March, and found a good number of canteens still closed. The owners said they could not afford to pay all their arrears at a go. They called on KMC to understand their plight as family men and to consider the huge amount they invested in setting up their canteens.
When contacted, the Spokesperson of the Kanifing Municipal Council, Mr. Pa Kalifa Sanyang confirmed the story, but could not tell how many canteens were affected. Mr. Sanyang indicated that the owners of the canteens were given terms and conditions. He stated that the owners of the canteens were informed of the conditions before the canteens were allocated to them; adding that they (canteen owners) agreed to adhere to the rules and conditions stipulated by the council.
He added that if any canteen owner falls short of meeting those terms and conditions, the Council would have no options but to close down their canteens until they comply with the demands put in place.

I'm afaird that KMC Canteeners ain't got the monopoly on suffering right now Toubab. In the wake of the Earthquake and Tsunami that happened yesterday. That's what I would call Suffering! Sometimes its just good for us all to count our blessings. What we've got. After allt he Canteeners have got life and where there's life there's hope.

Yes indeed the countries that have recently suffered at the hand of nature deserve help and assistance from others, that is indeed suffering of a great dimension, however the topic that I was commenting on was one of financial hardship and the suffering that has been caused by banks and others by the sin of greed leading to financial problems for everyone,in Gambia a poor country where the average Gambian struggles to survive in the good times is obviously worse than in the UK where everyone can have food to eat every day.

Toubab everyone can have food in the UK, if they can afford to buy it.

The reality is that businesses are struggling everywhere and one of the major challenges for any struggling small business is to be able to pay their overheads. Now if there's no demand for the services or products being supplied. Then daily takings are bound to drop and the business owner won't be able to raise enough money to pay his or her overheads. Unfortunately emotions and business don't mix. KMC is in the business to raise revenue and if the Canteen owners are in arrears. It seems as though the Canteen owners hadn't been fully aware of the term and conditions of their leasing agreements before they had signed them. It seems as KMC had given them a sufficient time to pay otherwise the arrears wouldn't of spiralled out of hand. Gambia maybe a poor country Toubab however there's still a lot of wealth in it. Just ask those Gambians who have returned home and invested their money there or others who never left and just worked hard to build up profitable businesses.

Sister Omega in UK there is a benefits system which provides for very basic needs, so there is no need for anyone legally in the country to go hungry.

In Gambia the MAJORITY of the people live a life of subsistence. The bit of wealth seen at the coast; businesses, cars etc IS NOT representative of the rest of the country.

Who those buildings that you describe belong to I have no idea but I guarentee you that MOST of them have been bought with "loans" from one of the many banks that proliferate Gambia these days,Gambian banks?,yes there are a FEW,reliable banks that do ethical business ? a couple perhaps. One thing that you have got right recently and that I agree with you is: "all British people are rich." You living in Britain KNOW that is not true, I wish you were able to convince your countrymen of this fact.

This bit impressed me from you blog link that lead to the BBC article here :http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-11427207
"Sometimes, when I get a foodbank box, I get really embarrassed that I can't feed my family. I very much feel that I have been let down by the welfare state."

Does this woman really mean to tell us that because she dos'nt get her food given to her by the welfare state she feels embarrassed she should be more than pleased that there is a charity who will assist her family when she and her partner cannot take care of their family.

There you go again Toubab with your presumptions Toubab. What countrymen are you referring to exactly and in what context? Are you talking about the English, Jamaicans or the Africans. Now I will for this particular discussion tell all of the English constituents of the UK that Britain is no longer rich.

Sorry about that Sister O I fell into your trap here by assuming that you were a Gambian, and they were the countrymen I was referring to I wrongly assumed (note the bad feeling of shame I am expressing for my mistake , that you were a born Gambian,I now have my doubts,so I do not make a mistake again, are you prepared to tell me in which country you were born ? and where your roots are and perhaps what nation do you consider home ?

I think that if Momodou and myself did not post, bantaba would be like watching paint dry as very few are posting probably fed up with all the party political stuff. You may remember I asked a little while ago for a Gambian bean recipe, was any recipe forth coming on bantaba ? No nothing, its good that you have returned and things are a little more interesting discussion wise now.I know its because I am white and never hidden the fact, and that I love Gambia and Gambians, now that I understand them a little, its a pity that that understanding is not reciprocated by many posters here.
Like all men we are shallow and are kept in our place by women,a few comic bits added to the sour dough that is often splodged out on bantaba should be welcome.sour dough is not quality, nor are many of my postings I admit that, stay about a bit more and keep posting its quite adictive.
