ALERT! ALERT! ALERT! ALERT! ALERT GAMBIANS IN LIBYA NEED TO BE EVACUATED
By Publisher on 25-02-11 (37 reads) News by the same author

Foroyaa received information from a Gambian in distress asking us to alert the Gambian authorities that they are trapped in Libya and has no where to go to and no Gambian official to contact. According to them the city is sliding into an ungovernable state.
“Tripoli is in amiss and our lives are at stake. We are not in touch with any Gambian official. We have no ambassador or consul to talk to. You are the only people we could contact at this moment. Please tell the authorities that we need help. We need to leave Tripoli now…” the caller uttered before the call was abruptly terminated.

We have informed advisors of Foroyaa to call the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to alert them to the problems of the Gambians in Tripoli.

The people at risk in Tripoli are not only Libyan citizens. The citizens of many countries are at risk. It is worse for citizens from sub-saharan Africa because of the announcement that mercenaries are recruited from the subregion by Ghadaffi to suppress the protesters. This makes it difficult for such people to move about in Tripoli or head to the border areas or the airport. They are in real danger and need to be rescued with speed. There is need for a collaborative action to be taken to protect and help evacuate those who are not citizens of that country and further make effort to ensure a peaceful transition of government authority.

The Government needs to motivate ECOWAS and The AU to meet and discuss how to collaborate with the UN and other continental groupings to protect those who are not Libyan citizens and help to repatriate them to their respective countries. The AU should also collaborate with the UN to provide a lasting solution to the crisis in Libya. Foroyaa will monitor progress on that score.

I think that it would be far better for the stranded Africans to contact the international Media i.e Aljeerzera or CNN via their mobile phones to make them aware of their plight, and also to counteract the roamers from the protesters that has been portrayed that all Africans are mercenaries.

Every country is responsible for its citizens! Heard gruesome pleas by other African countries stranded appealing through BBC focus on Africa (courtesy of Freedom on-line radio).

The Gambia government already cast the political dice and yet to act on diplomatic efforts to evacuate or protect Gambian nationals; as tension rising Foroyaa's news is timely and very important.

Yes very sensible,I agree, BUT,as is probably the case there are African mercenaries, using vehicles without number plates to hide
their true identity, paid for by Ghadaffi who are killing people.EVERYONE who wants to leave Lybia has to try all avenues themselves to leave,in practictical terms it is not possible for governments to do everything, the individual must manage.

Toubab! Situation is chaotic and if you don't know the country very well; will you dare venture to risk your life trying to leave your safe shelter for the borders? Its scary and government should intervene immediately

KOBO what you say is understandable and it is chaotic certainly all governments should do all they can to take care of their citizens but sometimes that is not enough and the individual may have to take chances with his life because assistance MAY not be forthcoming, all governments are composed of people and all good governments will do all they can,SOMETIMES that is not enough and people die WAITING for help that may never come.

Toubab Libya is mainly a vast area of desert, racist and foreigners (especially Black Africans) are prey. If they are entrapped and there is no escape route for them (which I presume to be), they can't do anything! Easily said than done

What they can do if the signal isn't blocked is to contact the media agencies as I earlier suggested because they will bring attention to their plight. Kobo is right that in Libya Africans are seen as easy prey after all Human Trafficking of Africans is common place in Libya coupled with Africans being seen as mercenries has made a violitle situation even worse.

There must be thousands of Africans stranded there amongst them are also illegal migrants taking the Back Way to Europe. What steps I wonder will the AU be taking to rescue its citizens.

"What steps I wonder will the AU be taking to rescue its citizens."

Good question sister O,will anyone be able to give an answer or will there be silence ?,and will anyone from the department in Gambia responsible for welfare of Gambians abroad give an answer?
How many Gambian citizens are in Libya at this moment.?

Lets see if the Observer publishes an "editorial" or a "statement" or "press release" if not, no one knows is the answer

Yaya Jammeh insulted Qaddafi and Libyans so that Gambians stuck there all get killed. It is one of his nasty schemes to have more Gambian blood spill. Yaya kills in many ways.

Sorry Toubab1020 so badly hates politics and wants things simple.

Karamba just imagine that you were stuck in Libya right now, and just went on to your mobile or wifi and read what you wrote here tonight. How would you be feeling?
Karamba you love to blame Jammeh for everything however he isn't responsible for the lack of empathy that you're displaying here tonight. jammeh isn't the only person in the world to speaking out against Gaddafi haven't you been watch or listening to the news lately?

There's a time for everything and right now the Africans in Libya won't hope it's not a joking matter.

African Union deeply concern about situation in Libya
africa » gambia
Friday, February 25, 2011

Addis Ababa, 23 February 2011: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Jean Ping, follows with great concern the situation obtaining in Libya. He condemns the disproportionate use of force against civilians and deeply deplores the many human lives lost so far. The Chairperson of the Commission, who is in contact with the Libyan authorities and other actors, will pursue his efforts for an end to the spilling of blood.

The Chairperson of the Commission reiterates the appeal made by the Peace and Security

Council for an immediate end of the repression and violence.

He stresses that only dialogue and consultation will enable the Libyans to find appropriate solutions to the challenges facing their country and to embark upon the necessary reforms to fulfill the aspirations of their people. He encourages all the actors concerned to favour dialogue in order to open new prospects for Libya in peace, security and democracy.

Hi Toubab,

There are no accurate figures about the specific amount of Gambians in Llbya because many of those who are there entered into the county as illegal immigrants. So its impossible for Gambian Authorities and other African nations to have a clear idea or how many of their citizens are living there at the moment. So a rescue attempt will be a stategic nightmare for them.

Thanks Sister O,that is very clear now,one cannot expect a government to have any knowledge of people who do not obey the rules, therefore such people cannot moan about the circumstances that they find themselves in when "the wheel comes off",such people may deserve sympathy, but "help" cannot be expected, their position is of their own making.
