Gambians Delayed For an Hour At the Airportīs Immigration Check point
By Fabakary B. Ceesay on 23-02-11 (15 reads) News by the same author

Information reaching Foroyaa indicate that Immigration Officers on duty at the Banjul Airport on Tuesday, 8 February 2011, collected passports from all The Gambians that arrived at the airport from the United Kingdom on board Thomas Cook and Air Monarch respectively and were left without any explanation given to them by the authorities.
According to the returnees (names withheld), upon their arrival at the airport, all Gambian passport holders were ordered to wait until all other passengers went through Immigration check points. They said to their surprise, the authorities collected all their passports from them without any explanation, but were only told to wait. They stated that the officers who collected their passports from them went into their office for about forty five minutes before they emerged and handed their passports back to them.
Asked whether they were screened or interrogated, the returnees said they were neither screened nor interrogated. They added that they were not informed as to why their passports were seized from them for about an hour. Thy lamented that they were not treated in that manner at foreign immigration check points and could not understand why they should be treated in that way in their own country. They could not understand why Nationals returning to their country could be kept waiting while foreign nationals were allowed entry without any hindrance or delay.
When he was contacted, the Immigration Spokesperson, Inspector Ensa Jawara said he is not aware of such procedures and the incident is news to him. Inspector Jawara said though it is normal at any entry point worldwide that all passengers have to go through security checks to authenticate their travelling documents before they could be allowed entry into that particular country. Inspector Jawara said he investigated the matter from their officials at the airport, but they said they were not aware of such incident. He added that there are different security personnel at the airport, arguing that the complainants may have mistakenly thought they were Immigration officers. He stated that the Immigration Service has given priority to Gambian arrivals by giving them their own entry points different from non Gambian arrivals. He asked the reporter to thoroughly investigate the matter.
Editorīs Note
Foroyaa will take the matter up with the authorities to know the truth.

KOBO,these links are non specific,<!edited by Admin>I suspect that the NIA had specific information about someone coming to Gambia on this particular day that they had an interest in,bearing in mind that the UK has the cheapest flights to Gambia probably in the whole of europe,so it mabe that the visitor was travelling from anywhere in europe via the UK.
