Surahata Danso was a former PDOIS key vote canvasser in WUlli. An energetic guy with a sharp tongue and mind. I wonder how he will feel Judging over Foroyaa reporter. Life is strange sometimes.

Foroyaa reporter in court for 'assault'

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, October 28, 2010
Abubacarr Saidykhan, a reporter with the Foroyaa newspaper and his younger brother Ousman Saidykhan on Wednesday, October 27th, 2010, appeared before Magistrate Surahata Danso of the Bundung Magistrates Court. The two are standing trial on three counts.
Count one: common assault contrary to Section 227 of the Criminal Code, Laws of The Gambia. The particulars of offence stated that on the 9th of May 2010 at Tallinding, the duo assaulted one Omar Jallow, a tenant in their compound by hitting him with a broken bottle on his head, and thereby committed an offence.

Count two: assaulting a police officer in due execution of his duties contrary to Section 230. The particulars of offence stated that on the 9th May 2010 at Tallinding Police Station, the first accused assaulted First Class Essa Camara, by hitting him on his face at the police station while executing his duties and thereby committed an offence.

Count three: willful damage of property contrary to Section 312. The particulars of offence stated that on the 9th May 2010 at Tallinding Police Station, the first accused, Abubacarr Saidykhan, tore the uniform of First Class Essa Camara, valued at around D250, and thereby committed an offence.

The duo denied the charges and were granted bail in the sum of D5000 and one Gambian surety. The prosecution called three witnesses to testify in the case and tendered exhibits and closed their case. The case was then adjourned.

Sergeant 248 Njie stood for the IGP.

Santa, even if Abubacarr Saidykhan,is a reporter for foroyaa ,if the prosecution and witnesses are competent and the facts accurate then the defendant (and his brother ) should be found guilty and sentenced, the fact that he is a reporter for a newspaper should have no effect on the sentence,it would APPEAR to me that due to the common sense amount of bail and conditions set this is the case BUT maybe this has NOT been noticed by those who MAY be able to influence the outcome of sentence imposed, interesting, lets wait and see the final result.

Toubab, point noted, however, my sceptism is to do with Suharata the Magistrate being a former PDOIS member and a key consumer of Foroyaa presiding in a case involving a reporter for the paper he use to love. It is an irony, some thing sentimental for him.

Santa I understand your point but I think he is likely to make his decision on the evidence and not on personalities or favorite newspapers with certain political leanings you know this man Surahata Danso and his doings far better than me you may well be right but bantaba is sleeping these days observing the events in the arab controlled world, whilst others have left and maybe dip in from time to time, having got fed up with the two main topics, you may recall I asked for a recipe to cook beans,no replies, maybe people have given up eating traditional food and prefer sausage or egg and chips.

Kobo, your take on this is the same as mine, there is no problem, and that to generate a problem that does not exist AT THIS TIME is perhaps not fair and to make observations on "PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE " as you put it where none has been shown to exist is again not fair.
Santa can express what opinions he wants here ,but to politise in the way he has is not helpful in my opinion, others may think differently, that's up to them.
This is my personal opinion .

Calm down guys. I made it clear that, I am not questioning Magi Surahata's ability to be independent, but the sentiment it will involve, Let us get not all rossy with this. We all know, fraternity issues use to get highlighted in court cases, Mason brothers, Jetsuit members, and other personal connections. I even use certain remarks in the past tense which means, Surahata may not be a PDOIS member any more. Guys, guys, Toubab you starting some fire here. Lol

My mouth is sealed. Surahata has no sentimental issues. I was not thinking, and realy, Surahata being a graduate of Foroyaa beureau, he is beyond any such low human feelings.

SANTANFARA! OF COURSE YOU ARE THINKING BUT YOUR THOUGHTS ARE PREJUDICIAL AND FALSE ASSUMPTIONS

PLEASE DON'T POLITICISE THIS CASE, PRE-JUDGE AND QUESTIONING SOMEONE'S PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE & INTEGRITY; WHILST PRESERVING YOUR OWN PERSONAL INTEGRITY INTACT (BEYOND QUESTIONABLE)

PETTY SENTIMENTS EXPRESSED ARE DUBIOUS AND YOU ARE USING POLITICS TO DAMAGE THE MAGISTRATES CHARACTER THAT'S NOT COOL BRO.

LET JUSTICE TAKES ITS COURSE

Sorry about the fire Santa I must admit that I thought your posting a little unfair and I agree with the sentiments expressed by KOBO that the topic had loud overtones of politics and little to do with the practical workings of the Gambian legal system and those employeed therein, which appear to be slowly progressing in the right direction after recent events.
