Prices of Cooking Oil, others Skyrocket, Consumers Raise Concerns By Kebba Camara 27-12-10
Investigations conducted by this reporter reveal that the price of cooking oil which used to be D5 has cup has now risen to D10. People who are engaged in the business said the gallon of oil costs D850 to D950 and that they can only make profit when they sell the cup for D9.50 or D10, depending on the price one buys the gallon for. When this reporter visited the market, both the vendors and consumers raised their concern on the skyrocketing price of commodities such as cooking oil. Most of them said they use the cooking oil on a daily basis.
A Senegalese vendor who spoke to this reporter from the Serrekunda market said they normally have difficulties with customers when they tell them that the price of cooking oil is now D10. “They think we just increase it deliberately, but when we don’t do this, we cannot also make profit,” he said. Investigating further, one can notice that a bag of sugar is now sold at D1, 300, while a cup of sugar stands at D7 or D7.50. Laundry Soap which used to be D5 is now at D7. A kilo of Irish potatoes is tagged at D30 and it is the same price for a kilo of onions. Market vendors told this reporter that they are selling tomato paste for D5 and D3 respectively. They said a cup of rice is sold for D4, D5 and D6 depending on the type or variety. Women palm oil sellers said they purchase a gallon of palm oil for D1, 150 and that the cups are sold at D12 and D6 depending on the quality. The women who spoke to this reporter said the little profit they make from each gallon amounts to only D50. They said the gallon used to cost them D1000 but that now it is increasing by the day. The reporter’s findings indicate that a bag of rice costs between D750 to D775 and the bag of “Saddam” rice is still stubbornly standing at D875.
