Monday, December 13, 2010 Gambian-born dissident and ringleader of the 1981 bloody abortive coup, Koukoie Samba Sanyang is not relenting in his efforts to repeat the mayhem and suffering inflicted upon Gambians in 1981. This time around, he is calling for an armed overthrow of the democratically elected government of The Gambia with the sole intention of becoming head of state of The Gambia, a far fetched dream as far as the current realities of this country is concerned. Koukoie, a self-styled cyber warrior made his intention clear in a letter written to Gambians, and obtained by the Daily Observer. Below is the full text of Mr. Sanyang's letter:
You can't do a good thing the wrong way
(Gambian search for genuine freedom, justice and unity)
Fellow Gambian brothers and sisters this is the moment for us to begin serious mass mobilization to conscientize Gambians in order to enable us accomplish the socio-politico-economic goals of our society and this can only be achieved by a people’s democratic revolution overthrowing President Yahya Jammeh’s neo-colonial regime gaining our freedom and justice.
Frankly speaking without cheating and being bias we all know the intensity of dissatisfaction all Gambians feels for the status quo and what specific changes they wish and demand. No responsible Gambian leader, politician, or concerned citizen should think or believe that only radical speeches, critical articles against Jammeh’s regime and hatred will cleanse the Gambian society which is so highly corrupt and perverted.
Together as concerned patriotic Gambians let us seek adequate remedies for the crisis of our Gambian nationhood. Fellow Gambian brothers and sisters we should be well aware that our country’s interests must rightly dictate our thoughts and guide our great actions for unity and survival. Today there exists the need for positive collective action to rescue our flagging democracy which requires our collective efforts, sacrifices and compromises. Objectively without prejudice and hatred let us face the facts to get things straightened out right now.
Our Gambian revolution not to talk of the opposition parties today are like a man suffering from two ailments which hinders him to walk, stand or sit and have peace within him because he has two sharp long thorns deep on his flesh; one on his buds causing him so much pain that he cannot sit for a second and the second one deep into his foot causing so much pains that he cannot either stand or walk an inch. And for this suffering man to have peace within him he is to try with courage despite all pains to remove the thorn deep into his buds that will allow him sit with comfort to remove the thorn deep into his foot that is causing him so much pain hindering him to move and go about his business.
This is the only way he can free himself from whatever hinders him from struggling for his survival. The two stages approach in his struggle to liberate himself from all pains is very necessary and very important as he can't overrun the stages. Fellow Gambian brothers and sisters this also applies to our revolution aiming to end state terrorism and settler neo-colonialism in The Gambia. We have to respect the rules of revolutionary struggle and aim at the right target not misleading ourselves. Unity is key to all.
It is a good thing daily lambasting President Yahya Jammeh for his wrong doings and failure to rightly govern our dear country but we should also recognize and acknowledge that we cannot want to do a good thing the wrong way. We have to seriously make an inner review of our revolutionary thoughts and actions and see if we are on the right path for our freedom and justice. My fellow Gambian brothers and sisters enough is enough for we should end the verbal treatment of our people’s problems and we should be able to discern our people’s genuine concerns and positively respond to their legitimate demands. Now is the right time for us to act and rescue our sinking nation.
Through my eyes the present Gambian conditions are false and deceptive based on a current political hypocrisy and misguidance and it is inadequate for improving the welfare of Gambian people. As we witness a sad moment in Gambian history there is the urgent need to break the political frontier that keeps apart progressive Gambians patriots and bridge the gulf in a bold and imaginative act. Now is the moment for all Gambians to discover that what they share in common is much more greater and more powerful than what divides them, and that Gambians of good will must work very hard together and be enrichened by their diversity, not fearful of it, if we Gambians are to build landscapes of freedom and peace. Today a national order is the surest safeguard against political conflict and civil wars in The Gambia.
If we want our revolutionary struggle to be legitimised we should be realist and responsible political leaders accepting the concept of criticism and self-criticism which is the base of every genuine democracy. We should be an example to the oppressed and exploited Gambians. We should have in our minds that we are struggling for "Freedom," "democracy," and "justice" and we must be clear in our mind and language that these words have been abused so long that their original meanings have been eviscerated. We can only give full meaning to what we say when we seriously come together and unite to fight the public enemy.
The essence of political freedom is the absence of coercion of one man by his fellow men. The fundamental danger to political freedom is the concentration of power. The existence of a large measure of power in the hands of a relatively few individual enables them to use it to coerce their fellow men. Preservation of freedom requires either the elimination of power where that is possible or its dispersal where it cannot be eliminated.
Freedom is "the power to choose and determine one's position". As such, man should choose and decide carefully on a course of action which would best benefit him and others. Freedom does not mean to satisfy all his instincts. Nor does it mean to give into the pressure of lusts and desires. Our behaviour should be guided always by our inane sense of what is right and should not be motivated by our desire for pleasure or immediate gratification.
"We should not be mere imitators with no firm determination. When we say, ‘We are with the people. Should people do well, so do we. And if they do evil, so do we'. But school ourselves. If people do good so should we. But if they do evil we should shun their evil deeds."
Koukoie Samba Sanyang
